Fraud costs the Australian economy at least $3 billion per year. The incidence of fraud within the Australian economy is increasing. Australian entities are ill-prepared to detect and prevent fraud against their businesses with very few developing or implementing any form of fraud control strategy (AS 8001-2003). The growing use of the Internet by organisations for electronic commerce increases their exposure to fraudulent activities. Inevitably much of the cost of fraud is passed on to the customers and the community at large. By providing large organisations with an approach to assist in detecting fraudulent behaviour in accounting systems, it is envisaged that this research will assist in reducing the impact of fraud on society.

Guaranteeing information security is of critical national importance, especially in the current political climate. Devices intended to safeguard Australia's electronic communications must be proven secure using leading-edge techniques. Currently, evaluation of such devices relies on informal procedures and the experience of individuals. This project will introduce more rigour into security evaluations by adapting techniques from the fields of safety analysis and formal methods. In particular, mathematical concepts will be introduced using notations suitable for use by security personnel with no prior formal methods experience. The outcomes of this project will enable more efficient and effective information security evaluations.

Business process modelling is a key tool for organisations striving to create efficiencies by leveraging their IT infrastructure. This project will develop techniques for increasing the productivity of business process analysts by allowing them to reuse as much as possible existing models rather than systematically desigining new ones from scratch. Specifically, the project will develop and validate a language for designing highly configurable process models. This language will enable superior approaches to business process modelling and hence smarter use of information. This will place Australia at the forefront of developments in business process management: a crucial technology in today's global, dynamic and heterogeneous environments.

This project aims to tackle the growing problem of data curation. The capacity to effectively utilise the increasing number of datasets available to organisations for timely decision making is diminishing, due to onerous data preparation and curation tasks that have to be performed before the data can be consumed by analytics platforms. The project will be a first attempt at using a novel process-oriented approach in micro-task crowdsourcing, and will create new knowledge to harness the full potential of crowd sourced data curation. This is expected to make a significant benefit towards enhanced organisational capacity to accelerate the time-to-value from data analytics projects.

    Summary
A framework for building dynamic knowledge bases in the biomedical domain. This project will provide clinicians and researchers with a semantics and time-aware technique, which will help them work together to build and maintain the knowledge required to support a better management and understanding of the mechanisms (for example, gene mutations) that affect diseases in any biomedical domain.
