A large-scale distributed experimental facility for the internet of things. This project aims to establish a large-scale, real-world experimental facility for the Internet of Things (IoT), which is currently missing in Australia, as well as in the rest of the world. The project is expected to be an essential instrument to achieve Australia’s leadership on key enabling technologies of the IoT, and to provide Australian research community with a unique platform for large-scale experimentation and .... A large-scale distributed experimental facility for the internet of things. This project aims to establish a large-scale, real-world experimental facility for the Internet of Things (IoT), which is currently missing in Australia, as well as in the rest of the world. The project is expected to be an essential instrument to achieve Australia’s leadership on key enabling technologies of the IoT, and to provide Australian research community with a unique platform for large-scale experimentation and evaluation of IoT technologies and services. The project will also serve as a vehicle for the education and training of Australia’s next generation of scholars and engineers, and contribute to Australia’s scientific visibility.

By incorporating meaning of web-content in a form that can be accessed and processed by intelligent software agents, the Semantic Web will allow computers and humans to work in cooperation. This research will address the needs of both the Australian government and industry that provide and make smart use of information available on the Web. It will ensure Australian preparedness for the next-generation web technology.

Bio-Acoustic Observatory: Engaging Birdwatchers to Monitor Biodiversity by Collaboratively Collecting and Analysing Big Audio Data. This project will research how to crowd-source the collection and analysis of environmental animal sounds (for example, birds, frogs). This will enable a bio-acoustic observatory which provides a scalable, objective and permanent record of the environment, something hitherto impossible. The project will investigate how to engage the community of birdwatchers to extend their pastime online with new kinds of interactive tools to enable collaborative analysis of big audio data, and new kinds of birding experiences. Outcomes will be: new approaches to physical/virtual engagement in human-computer interaction; new approaches to analysing big data; a new validated ecological monitoring technique and concepts for sustainable knowledge generation communities.
