Summary
Burqas, borders and babies: intimate citizenship in postcolonial Australia. Anti-Muslim sentiment across the globe is increasingly expressed on the grounds that Muslims are misogynistic, raising questions about Muslims' intimate relations. This project will investigate the ways that Muslim intimacy has become a site of political contestation in Australia with implications for migrant security and border security.
Australian Immigrant Mentalities. Immigrants arrive in Australia in hundreds of thousands and are generally anonymous and invisible in the historical and contemporary record. But many emigrants, from the days of the convicts to present times, have written home. These records contain their direct experience of immigration. This project explores the inner worlds of the immigrant , their response to Australia and how they coped with the process of migration. A dynamic understanding of labour market mobility of new migrants. Australia is an immigrant country. Despite this, we know little about the factors that enable some migrants to integrate quickly and successfully into the labour market, while others do not. This project will use an excellent set of longitudinal data that follow new migrants over a period of three and a half years. It will apply sophisticated panel data econometric techniques to identify the causes of their success or otherwise ....A dynamic understanding of labour market mobility of new migrants. Population ageing, labour mobility and sustainability of China's economic growth - a dynamic general equilibrium analysis. China is Australia's second largest trading partner. This project will enable Australian policymakers and business partners to gain better understanding of China's macroeconomic performance between 2008 and 2030. Screening and responding to domestic violence experienced by refugee women. We will adapt and test an evidence-based intervention to identify and address domestic violence with newly arrived refugee women, partnering with Settlement Services International, one of Australia’s largest providers of settlement programs. Domestic violence is the lead contributor to premature death among Australian women, and costs $22 b each year, with refugee women at heightened risk. Transnationalism’s replacement of permanent movements as the dominant paradigm in migration studies raises questions for demographic measurement and the study of migration. This project will use traditional demographic data with integrated quantitative and qualitative research to analyse the diaspora–migration–development nex ....Transnationalism and diaspora.
