Emotion dynamics are reliably associated with psychological well-being. However, emotional flexibility and stability have been identified as important for healthy functioning. This project aims to resolve this paradox by applying cutting-edge statistical techniques to model emotion dynamics in daily life, as captured using smartphones. Zero-sum thinking: psychological predictors and causes. This project investigates the causes and psychological triggers of zero-sum thinking, the tendency to think that others' gains leave less for oneself. The results will enable negotiators and managers to defuse dysfunctional zero-sum thinking, thereby increasing the chances for cooperation and 'win-win' outcomes.
Using self-report data to predict crash risk: how accurate is it and how can it best be used? The aim of this project is to develop better methods to collect self-reported data about motorists' driving behaviour in order to understand the factors associated with road crashes. The results will not only assist to identify 'at risk' drivers but also inform interventions designed to reduce crashes on Australian roads.
Optimal Fundraising Design in a Competitive Market: A Unifying Framework. Increased competition from over 57,000 registered charities and a recent 6% decrease in individual donations, have increased the need for charities to improve their fundraising strategies. This project aims to develop a comprehensive framework – based on theories from marketing, psychology, economics, sociology, and philanthropy— and develop novel methodologies to determine effective charitable fundraising strategies in ....Optimal Fundraising Design in a Competitive Market: A Unifying Framework. Increased competition from over 57,000 registered charities and a recent 6% decrease in individual donations, have increased the need for charities to improve their fundraising strategies. This project aims to develop a comprehensive framework – based on theories from marketing, psychology, economics, sociology, and philanthropy— and develop novel methodologies to determine effective charitable fundraising strategies in a competitive marketplace. Key outcomes will include the theoretical model, and tests using conjoint choice-experiments, controlled field experiments and 10 years of giving data from 4 million Australian donors. Buttressing public trust in science has never been more important, yet many sciences are experiencing a crisis of confidence. The current system of relying on journal prestige to calibrate our confidence in individual research findings has created corrupt incentives for scientists, and risks undermining public trust in science. Thousands of scientists and institutions around the world have indicated that research evaluation needs an overhaul by signing the Declaration on Research Assessment. One solution is to create a public, transparent, and valid process for producing and sharing expert evaluations of individual papers.
