Summary
Time-to-event analysis is a statistical method for examining the occurrence of disease-related events in individuals followed for varying periods of time. The method is widely used in health research. The technicalities of the methods are subtle and by paying careful attention to these this grant will provide extended methods, new software, and apply methods more effectively to gain new insights to disease progress, and to enhance the efficiency of health research.
Evidence-based improvement of statistical inference practices in psychology and other disciplines. The commonest ways that many researchers currently draw conclusions from their data have been shown to be inefficient, and often used incorrectly. This project will develop new, better statistical representations and software tools for data analysis. It will evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of these. Summary
Public health guidelines should be based on rigorous evidence. If underlying studies are not sound, guidelines will not be credible or implemented. Dietary guidelines have been criticized for being biased. Our group studies bias across the whole research process – from the questions asked to the final publication. This project will measure the influence of bias at all stages in nutrition research in order to improve the evaluation of this research and the evidence base for dietary guidance.

Complex networked social systems. A recurring contemporary theme across many social science disciplines is the significant role of social networks in shaping the course of interpersonal interactions and their cascading social consequences. The aim of this Initiative is to build a multi- disciplinary Research Network spanning the social and mathematical sciences that can develop a new interdisciplinary science of networks and network-based social processes. This project will shed light on how courts, lawyers and experts can work effectively together to deliver expert evidence in the courtroom. Improving the provision and effective use of expert evidence will benefit the Australian community by providing a better quality criminal justice system.

Increasing pay differences between CEOs and the average working Australian have resulted in a less equitable and economically divided society. This issue has reached a critical point as taxpayer money is now needed to fund stimulus packages and finance companies facing insolvency while CEO pay on average has remained unchanged or increased. This project aims to deliver more accurate estimates of choice behaviour by reducing biases due to choice task complexity in surveys as well as design artefacts. Extracting 'true' preferences is challenging, not only due to possible hypothetical bias, but also due to increasingly complex choice tasks and the existence of design artefacts.
