Summary
Time-to-event analysis is a statistical method for examining the occurrence of disease-related events in individuals followed for varying periods of time. The method is widely used in health research. The technicalities of the methods are subtle and by paying careful attention to these this grant will provide extended methods, new software, and apply methods more effectively to gain new insights to disease progress, and to enhance the efficiency of health research.
CareTrack Aged: Appropriate Care Delivered To Australians Living In Residential Aged Care

Summary
Given Australia’s rapidly ageing population, keeping up with future demands and maintaining quality of care in residential aged care facilities (RACF) is vital. This study will assess whether care delivered is consistent with the evidence in 15 conditions that are frequently managed in RACFs. These will include delirium, dementia, depression, pain management and medication management. We will also assess the quality of life of residents in RACFs.

Advancing the application of Rasch models to the level of tests: estimating person parameters independently of all test parameters. The project advances recent theoretical work on Rasch models which makes it possible to compare estimates of person locations on a scale independently of all properties of the tests to which they have responded. The project aims to circumvent the current methods of test equating where various distribution assumptions are implied.
Evidence-based improvement of statistical inference practices in psychology and other disciplines. The commonest ways that many researchers currently draw conclusions from their data have been shown to be inefficient, and often used incorrectly. This project will develop new, better statistical representations and software tools for data analysis. It will evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of these. Summary
Public health guidelines should be based on rigorous evidence. If underlying studies are not sound, guidelines will not be credible or implemented. Dietary guidelines have been criticized for being biased. Our group studies bias across the whole research process – from the questions asked to the final publication. This project will measure the influence of bias at all stages in nutrition research in order to improve the evaluation of this research and the evidence base for dietary guidance.

The value of characteristics of Australian wheat. This project will identify the functional wheat characteristics considered by the Japanese millers when deciding what and how much to buy. It will also determine how these functional and non-functional Australian wheat characteristics are perceived by the millers compared to other countries, and determine the importance of each one of these characteristics on the final choice.
The presentation of expert evidence in Australian criminal trials: the role of lawyers and experts. This project will shed light on how courts, lawyers and experts can work effectively together to deliver expert evidence in the courtroom. Improving the provision and effective use of expert evidence will benefit the Australian community by providing a better quality criminal justice system.
Integrating choice set formation and taste heterogeneity in market segmentation. This project develops a new model of consumer decision-making to provide managerial insights related to market segmentation, product portfolio optimisation and marketing communication strategies. The model can be specified for a particular product category using data collected from a novel elicitation instrument developed as part of this project.
