The ACcORD project brings together a multidisciplinary team to improve health and quality of life of people with dementia and their carers. A program of research driven by end users will be conducted across four key themes: 1) Development of measures for assessing unmet needs; 2) Exploring barriers to service delivery; 3) Medico-legal and financial impediments to providing care; and 4) Testing innovative strategies to improve health outcomes for people with dementia and their carers.

Summary
There are substantial risks of inadequate pain assessment and management in persons with cognitive impairment and particularly in those with communication problems. Undetected or under-treated pain can have serious adverse effects on frail older adults including poorer cognitive performance, increased levels of depression, anxiety and disruptive behaviours, a reduced quality of life and higher levels of functional disability. These adverse effects contribute to greater demands for daily nursing ....There are substantial risks of inadequate pain assessment and management in persons with cognitive impairment and particularly in those with communication problems. The present proposal aims to develop more sensitive, reliable and valid questionnaire and non-verbal measures of pain in older adults with cognitive impairment and particularly in those with verbal communication problems. By completion, the present studies should provide much needed information on the reliability and validity of several different types of verbal and non-verbal indicators of possible pain. Summary
Manipulating the bleeding/clotting system is a critical but expensive part of modern medicine, eg some people need blood thinners while others can bleed too much. Thrombin generation is the ideal overall test for the bleeding/clotting of blood, but current methods have major problems. We developed and patented a test that deals with most of the problems. This proposal will create an assay that is easy for doctors to perform without a specialised laboratory.

Summary
Health conditions like pain and depression are difficult to measure, yet we can hear in someone’s voice if they are upset or distressed. This study is looking to develop ways the voice can be used to track changes in a patient’s condition. By recording a speech sample and analyzing parts of the signal, we may be able to tell if a drug treatment for depression is working, or if a patient is experiencing less pain after therapy.

This project will develop a new ultrasensitive method using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to measure extremely low level of circulating estrogens in the bloodstream especially in mice. This will allow for the first time the ability to study the natural regulation of fertility in mice and other sub-primate mammals for which the present assay methods are not adequate.

Older people in hospital are at high risk of adverse outcomes, a vulnerability commonly referred to as frailty. In community-dwelling older people, frailty status can be measured precisely with a Frailty Index score. This research aims to develop a Frailty Index from a standardised comprehensive geriatric assessment instrument used in the routine care of many patients in hospital. This would assist clinicians to identify vulnerable older inpatients, improving their care in the acute setting.
