Heart failure (HF) is increasing - with ~5million sufferers (1-3rd in New York Heart Association Class III-IV i.e. severe cases) in the US alone, and ~12-15 million worldwide. Its management consumes health resources and strains sufferers, families and institutions. Summary
In some patients with severe heart failure, insertion of a mechanical pump to assist the heart actually leads to recovery of the heart's function. More understanding of this process is needed so we can better predict and identify it.This project aims to assess the usefulness of ultrasound (echocardiography) in measuring heart function in patients who have a mechanical pump. Once its usefulness is established, we will use it to evaluate and attempt to induce recovery in such patients.
Performance And Safety Testing Of The BioQ Cardiac Assist System In A Chronic Ovine Heart Failure Animal Model

Summary
This proposal will test a novel cardiac assist system in safety and performance studies using a chronic sheep heart failure model. This device has been tested in cardiovascular simulators and in an acute animal model showing attractive proof-of-concept data. Specifically, the device increased left coronary artery blood flow and reduced aortic pulse and mean pressures using our novel self-powered fully implantable stand alone device, a potential therapy treatment for heart failure.

Summary
Most Australians will have an IV catheter (IV drip) in their hand or arm during a hospital stay. Catheter insertion is painful and costly. It is repeated during hospitalisation because it was thought catheters could only be used for 3-4 days without vein irritation or infection. Newer catheters and preliminary research suggest catheters can actually be used until no longer needed. This research will confirm whether this approach reduces pain and costs without increasing side effects.
