Summary
Severe liver damage due to chronic hepatitis and other common liver diseases is now a major cause of illness and death in Australia. This project will examine how a hormone system contributes to the development of liver damage in these diseases. We will study whether drugs targeting this system can be used to reduce liver scarring and prevent the development of severe liver damage and its complication.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with common and severe conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease and diabetes. Chronic liver disease is widespread in our community, and is increasing due to fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis. Liver disease leads to permanent liver scarring, liver cancer and other life-threatening complications. This research investigates the role of a hormone system called the renin-angiotensin system in liver disease, and investigated the use of drugs that act on this system for the prevention and treatment of liver scarring and these complications.
Development Of Lentiviral Vectors For The Treatment Of X-linked Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID-X1)

Summary
The first successful gene therapy clinical trial was reported in 2000 with the treatment of X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID-X1), commonly known as “bubble-boy” disease. The subsequent development of leukaemia in 3 of 11 patients has prompted the need to develop alternative vectors for gene delivery, such as HIV-1-based lentiviral vectors. This project will evaluate the efficacy and safety of lentiviral vectors in vivo, and hence their therapeutic potential for treating SCID-X1.
