Many students leave higher education and disproportionate numbers are from educationally disadvantaged groups, including first-in-family learners. Too often, the individual learner is 'blamed' for this departure and perceived as deficit in necessary knowledge. Strategies of academic distinction and social distance: aversion and acceptance of comprehensive schooling. Why are some comprehensive school systems so much more equitable and inclusive than others? This international study seeks to understand the factors to which like-status parents respond, the lines of individual and collective action taken in their management of family education strategies and the effects of such strategies on education systems.
Getting a job: vocationalism, identity formation and schooling in communities at disadvantage. This research will use young people's stories to investigate the barriers and obstacles to getting a job, and from their vantage point, identify the educational, policy and practice contexts that need to be created and more widely sustained in order to assist their career aspirations and life chances.

Effectiveness of a whole-school intercultural approach aimed at removing barriers to learning for students from non-mainstream backgrounds. This project will involve the study of localising, implementing and evaluating a whole-school intercultural approach that emphasises inclusion, diverse curricula and the monitoring of attitudes. It is anticipated that the approach will remove barriers to learning for non-mainstream students to help to address systemic inequity.

The experience of racism degrades senses of belonging and generates disaffection, leads to ill-health and restrictions of mobility, as well as other social and individual pathologies. Reducing racism will strengthen Australia's social fabric. The challenge of managing cultural diversity in education: the case of Arab-Australian youth. This project investigates the challenges posed by cultural diversity in multicultural schools. It will focus specifically on students from Arabic-speaking background (ASB) attending secondary schools in the Northern and Western regions of Melbourne. The study will assess whether individual students' attitudes and the schools' structures and pedagogical ideology impact upon ASB students' achievements. ....The challenge of managing cultural diversity in education: the case of Arab-Australian youth. A telephone survey, 12000 respondents, and fieldwork in ten localities, are the major method. Spatial and social variations in the experience of racism will be analysed. Social construction theory will be tested as an explanation of such variations.
