Summary
The aim of this study is to determine which factors influence forgetting in typically developing children and in children with epilepsy. Specifically, we want to establish how forgetting occurs over time and whether it is influenced by other cognitive/thinking skills, such as strategies used to remember information, attention or resistance to interference. Moreover, we are interested in whether retention rates are affected by different types of learning materials (i.e. visual versus verbal).

Summary
This project addresses the question of why some people develop PTSD following trauma and others don’t. It will assess the influence of genetics (specifically a genotype that influences Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) on emotional memory processes as distressing emotional memories are a core symptom of PTSD. If we find that people with a particular genetic profile have a greater risk of developing intrusive memories after trauma, this will help us better target treatment for those individuals.

Summary
I am a research scientist interested in the immune system. Specifically, I intend to investigate immunological memory, which is the basis of vaccination. This refers to the ability of certain immune cells such as T and B cells to ‘remember’ a pathogen, so that a rapid and enhanced response can be generated upon re-infection with the same pathogen. This can be investigated by experimental techniques such as flow cytometry, histology and confocal microscopy on cells from infected mouse tissue.

Summary
Children born extremely preterm are at risk of struggling at school and falling behind normal educational milestones, and having emotional problems such as anxiety. This study aims to see whether anxiety affects these children’s ability to learn and use new information. It will also determine whether an intervention targeting these thinking skills is less useful in children with higher levels of anxiety.

Memory B cells generate rapid and potent antibody responses to known threats. The molecular basis for this is unknown, but defects increase the risk of infection, autoimmunity, and allergy. Autoimmunity and allergy are often mediated by a poorly understood antibody subclass, immunoglobulin E (IgE). My project will use emerging single-cell technologies to reveal the molecular mechanisms of antibody memory and IgE regulation, enabling the design of superior vaccines and immunomodulatory therapy.

Summary
Stroke populations are at a risk of dementia. Structural changes have been demonstrated to precede cognitive changes, providing a potential for early diagnosis and intervention. Magnetic resonance imaging markers of structural connectivity are powerful predictors of dementia. As a longitudinal study, this proposal has the unique advantage that I will be able to detect changes in post-stroke brain networks in the 3 years after stroke. This raises the potential for future clinical application.

An unexpected consequence of the Back to Sleep program is an increased incidence of deformational plagiocephaly (DP), or “flat head syndrome”, and concern about delayed development. It is not clear whether the current recommendation to provide ‘tummy-time’ play for infants when awake is the best way to prevent DP. Development of typical infants 0-4 months and infants with DP will be investigated and parents surveyed as a basis for development and trialling of a new DP prevention initiative.

The "Use it or lose it" principal is highly applicable in cognition functions, particularly with ageing. This project aims to use an intervention that promotes active brain processes and function to protect and preserve it from deterioration. The effect of this dementia-prevention strategy and results will help fill gaps in the current body of knowledge, and will allow the prescription of individualised treatment by showing the mechanisms by which this intervention works to improve cognition.

As many as 1 in 500 children have cerebral palsy or a brain injury. 1 in 3 cannot walk, 1 in 4 cannot talk, 3 in 4 are in pain. These conditions impact on a child's ability to use their hands to touch, play, draw and explore. Hand use is the single most important factor for determining a child's long term independence into adulthood. This project explores the most effective treatment approach to enable children to use their hands to reach the goals they want to achieve and live meaningful lives.
