Summary
Now that newborn hearing checks are available, hearing loss can be picked up soon after birth and hearing aids are fitted shortly after. Although procedures exist for checking that the devices make sounds audible, there is no way to evaluate their effectiveness for supporting a child’s auditory discrimination. This study aims to 1) develop new clinical tools for assessing infants’ auditory discrimination, and 2) determine whether early discrimination predicts spoken language at 3 years of age.

This project investigates how the voices of minority groups are represented on mainstream Australian television, when they do appear. Pitcairn Island Language in the Diaspora. This project aims to expand knowledge of how different social environments affect language structure and use. It will analyse Pitkern, the Pitcairn Island language which is on the brink of extinction. It will supplement existing documentation of the language with that of its diaspora varieties in New Zealand and Australia.
