Developing Early Literacy in Informal Settings: Engaging Disadvantaged Aboriginal and CALD Families Outside Formal Settings. The development of literacy in pre-school age children is a national priority. This research will address a major gap in the provision of support for literacy development in children and families who do not access formal pre-school programs. It will directly address the disadvantage experienced by children and families in informal settings. The outcomes of this research will benefit work in this area at both a theoretical and a practical level. It will provide a strengthened research base around reaching and involving children and families and will inform those literacy methodologies that seek to address linguistic and cultural difference.

Detecting language disorder in children with a language background other than English: the role of the Dynamic Assessment. 17.6% of Australia's culturally diverse population are born in non-English speaking countries. Recently, reports of unprecedented growth in the diagnosis of children with language disorders have emerged. There are difficulties in accurately identifying children at risk of language disorder. We hypothesize that some children with language backgrounds other than English (LBOTE) are mis-identified. If true, then scarce resources are being misdirected and inappropriately allocated, depriving children with true language disorder of support and intervention. The aim of this project is to determine the utility of the Dynamic Assessment to discriminate normal language learning from language learning difficulties in LBOTE children.

Building Financial Literacy and Retirement Savings Engagement by Developing a Financial Education Programme for the Workplace. To limit the drain on the federal budget as the population ages government have introduced compulsory superannuation; making individuals responsible for a significant proportion of their own retirement income. Employees are able to choose both their superannuation fund and investment mix. These are complex decisions which require a significant level of financial literacy. Failure to make appropriate decisions can significantly reduce wealth at retirement leading to a greater reliance on the age pension. Results from this project will inform government, employers and superannuation funds about the role of financial education in improving financial literacy and hence retirement savings decision making.
