Meta-microscopy of insect tissue: How nature grows bicontinuous nanosolids. Several butterfly species grow a complex nano-sculptured matrix whose chiral network structure confers remarkable optical properties, including jewel-like reflections. The formation process remains mysterious and a spectacular case of bottom-up self-assembly at far larger scales than accessible in the lab. Several butterfly species grow a complex nano-sculptured matrix whose chiral network structure confers remarkable optical properties, including jewel-like reflections. The formation process remains mysterious and a spectacular case of bottom-up self-assembly at far larger scales than accessible in the lab. The project aims to decipher this process, by (a) tomography of a species where arrested growth sites represent time-frozen snapshots of the development, and (b) by a combination of micron-resolved in-vivo microscopy of a developing butterfly wing with a growth model to infer nanometer-scale information. This insight will lead to blueprints for self-assembly strategies and shed light on function and form of inner-cellular membranes. Read moreRead less
III-V semiconductor nanowires for ultrafast device applications. Nanowires are a new innovation enabling the integration of nanotechnology into conventional industrial semiconductor processes. This project will employ one of the unique properties that many nanowires exhibit - their very fast resetting time, to develop novel and innovative high-speed devices for electronic and optical applications.

This project aims to develop new flexible regression models and classification algorithms, along with robust and efficient inference methods, applicable to a wide range of non-Euclidean data types which arise in many fields of science, business and technology. There are serious flaws with currently available methods of analysis for non-Euclidean data. This project expects to transform such analyses by providing new quantitative tools within a unifying framework. The anticipated project outcomes will be of mathematical interest and valuable in applications such as finance (predicting Australian stock returns); modelling electroencephalography data; Australian geochemical data, relating to sediments; and Australian X-ray tumour image data. Ultra-fast alchemy: a new strategy to synthesise super-dense nanomaterials. We have recently created a new super-dense aluminium phase by ultrafast laser microexplosion. This project will search further for new super-dense material phases with drastically different and exotic properties, such as those inside planets and stars, and which have great potential as new nanomaterials for industrial applications.
Novel techniques for statistical and mathematical analyses of sequence data. Algorithms will be developed for analysing and comparing the sequences of DNA letters and amino acids constantly being generated in massive quantities by biological research. The novel approach taken is based on the statistical frequency of occurrence of short words and is designed specifically for situations where current methods fail.
Towards High-quality Hetero-epitaxial III-V Semiconductor Nanowires. The use of semiconductor nanowires has uncovered many scientific curiosities and extended their potential applications in many fields. In general, nanowire growth is governed by metallic catalysts, involving nanowire nucleation and growth. So far, the role of catalysts during nanowire nucleation is not clear and needs urgent attention. This project aims to investigate the behaviour of catalysts before and during the nucleation ....Towards High-quality Hetero-epitaxial III-V Semiconductor Nanowires.
