J.G. Crawford: Shaping Australia's Place in the World. Through a study of Sir John Grenfell (J.G.) Crawford, this project will examine transformations in Australian policy during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Crawford was a leading member of a generation of public servants who recast the practices of government, in this case through a particular focus on Australia's role in our region and among developing countries.
Hostel stories: toward a richer narrative of the lived experiences of migrants. This project will examine stories relating to the migrant experience among former residents of hostels located in South Australia in the period 1949-85. The main aim is to develop a more complex narrative of the lived reality of migrants in this critical period of Australian contemporary history.
Fostering Women Leaders Through Educational Exchange, 1930-1980. This project plans to explore what makes it possible for women to exercise leadership. This project is a transnational study of women from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Philippines who participated in educational exchange programs with the United States in the mid-20th century. A history of press photography in Australia. Press photography has long influenced how Australians have understood themselves and their world. In collaboration with the National Library of Australia and the Walkley Foundation, the project explores the evolving role of photographs in breaking news, and historical shifts in photographic technologies, media practices and ethics.
Vines, Wine and Identity: The Hunter Valley NSW and Changing Australian Taste. Australia is a leader in global wine trade and tourism, and Australian drinkers are shifting from beer to wine. Yet little is known about the regional communities that make wine, how wine production has shaped their identity, and how producers have changed national culture by creating a taste for their wines. The economic and social contribution of the Western Australian CME sector. The first co-operative in Western Australia (WA) was founded in Albany in 1868. Since then, co-operative, and mutual enterprises (CMEs) have played a significant role in the development of the state. The evolution of the WA Co-operative and Mutual Enterprise (CME) sector was different from other states. This project aims to reverse the trajectories of Menang Nyungar knowledge imbedded in a historical fish collection, returning language, stories, and fishing practices to the Menang community. By working in a cross-sector, collaborative and Indigenous-governed team our research will enrich and re-frame the understanding of this collection in the Museum, unearth Indigenous taxonomic practices, produce new histories of biocultural collections, an ....Entangled Knowledges in the Robert Neill Collection. The Burke and Wills Scientific Expedition 1860-61: the Aboriginal story. This study will provide the first systematic history of Aboriginal associations with the Burke and Wills expedition and subsequent relief expeditions. It will reveal a rich and varied narrative that includes such things as their interactions with expedition members, the use of Aboriginal foods and methods of preparation, and Aboriginal guides.
