    Identifying Cell Type Specific Biomarkers Of Recurrent Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma And Mapping Cancer-stroma Interactions Using Single Cell Biology And Cell-to-cell Communication Networks

    Summary
    Cancer is a major cause of death in Australia. Despite advances in our understanding of the mutations that occur and the sets of genes expressed in cancer we have a major gap in our understanding of what is happening within tumours. Using new single cell technology we will generate new molecular portraits of cancers that give us understanding of the sets of genes expressed on individual cancer cells, the normal cells within a tumour and how they interact with cancer cells to form a tumour.

    COMPARE- Constraint Induced Or Multi-Modal Aphasia Rehabilitation: An RCT Of Therapy For Stroke Related Chronic Aphasia

    COMPARE is a 3 arm national randomised controlled trial comparing two types of intensive speech pathology treatment to usual care, for people with language disability 6 months to 3 years following stroke. After stratification by aphasia severity, participants are randomised to Multi-modality Aphasia Therapy, Constraint Induced Aphasia Therapy, or usual care. Cognitive, language, and speech assessments at baseline will enable sophisticated predictors of treatment responsiveness to be defined.

    Endometrial Exosomes: A New Paradigm In Endometrial-embryo Cross-talk

    Establishment of pregnancy requires molecular communication between the embryo and the lining of the womb (the endometrium) which enhances implantation into the womb and placental development. Nanoparticles (exosomes) released by the endometrium into the uterine cavity, carry cargo of genetic material and proteins, which may be transferred to the pre-implantation embryo. We will define functional changes induced by exosomes, that impact on implantation and the fetus’s long-term health.

    Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of disability in young Australians. The condition frequently manifests in impaired verbal communication. Communication is essential to successful rehabilitation, and return to society. However, the critical time for delivery of optimal treatment for communication remains unknown. This prospective longitudinal study will examine communication recovery following (TBI) to identify predictors of recovery and the best time to offer treatment.

    A Mechanotransduction Apparatus To Coordinate Epithelial Collective Cell Migration.

    Epithelial cells migrate as physically coherent collective groups, which is necessary for normal development and is disrupted as cancers progress to become invasive and spread. Collective migration requires communication so that the behaviour of individual cells is properly coordinated. In this project we investigate how the transmission of physical force between cells allows them to communicate; and test how its disruption contributes to cancer invasion.

    The Role Of Natural Protein Inhibitors In Blocking Breast Cancer Invasion

    The mechanisms required for breast cancer cells to spread outside of the ducts and into the surrounding breast tissue are largely unknown. There is increasing evidence that the cell layer surrounding the ducts (myoepithelium) functions to suppress invasion. We aim to test if a protein inhibitor that is expressed in these cells can preventing breast cancer invasion in models of early breast cancer and if its expression can predict those patients that are unlikely to develop invasive cancers.

    This study will evaluate the impact of a novel question prompt list (QPL) for parents of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), on their communication with their child’s doctor, and health outcomes such as adherence. The QPL aims to increase parent question asking and information sharing between clinicians and parents; improve parents’ ADHD knowledge across the developmental lifespan of their child; and thus improve adherence to medication in children with ADHD.
