The overall goal is to produce technologies that will enable the home to be a ?intelligent, caring advisor? and provide operational effectiveness for people with decreasing functional capacity (eg aged). It can monitor and support activities of varying complexity without compromising a normal lifestyle, enabling people of varying abilities to be independent, whilst being cared for by their homes. This caring will range from advice systems for detecting hazardous situations and alerting the user, through to detecting subtle deviations from complex, normal activities over significant periods of time (such as caused by the onset of an illness).Read moreRead less

Distributed large-scale optimisation methods in computer vision. With the number of images and video available over the internet reaching billions and growing, the need for new tools for handling and interpreting such huge amounts of data is quickly becoming apparent. This project will focus on developing new optimisation methods for efficiently computing solutions for a broad class of large-scale problems.

Besides directly benefiting the Partner Organization, this project will enable more efficient access to large picture repositories in news agencies and publishers, digital libraries and film archives. It will make public use of visual information much more convenient and economical. It will help security officers to effortlessly and accurately find particular scenes from the images generated by a large closed-circuit TV networks. Also, the developed technology can be applied to tele-education and e-commerce. New algorithms developed in this project will benefit the Australian and world scientific communities.Read moreRead less

The research is expected to provide a significant boost in the effectiveness of safety and security measures for public facilities and open spaces that are monitored by surveillance cameras. The general public benefits from this through a decreased need for intrusive security measures, and increased deterrence of crime and anti-social behaviour. This capability is in demand worldwide for both public and private camera networks, whose usefulness is currently limited by the difficulty of monitoring them. We therefore anticipate considerable commercial interest in Australia and internationally.

The Challenge of Alignment Distortion and Creating Next Generation Automatic Facial Expression Detection. The last two decades have seen an escalating interest in automating the coding of facial expressions. Despite this keen interest, the promise of computer vision systems to accurately code facial expressions in natural circumstances remains elusive. Our interdisciplinary team will research a new paradigm to account for facial alignment distortion directly rather than aiming to achieve invariance to it. The project will also research new data agnostic feature compaction capabilities to enable scalable learning on the world’s largest and challenging expression dataset available to us through international collaboration. Tackling these two major open problems will make accurate coding of facial expressions in natural environments achievable.Read moreRead less

communications technologies. Current information retrieval methods are becoming ineffective due to
their reliance on simple term-based methods, resulting in a massive number of matches, of which only
a small proportion are relevant. We address this problem by developing new matching algorithms which
understand the underlying meaning of documents in database repositories - by building semantic
structures semi-automatically - and thus provide more relevant information to queries.
This project will be of great benefit to a multitude of end-users in medicine, history, law and many other disciplines.

The recent increase of real-world applications calls for higher retrieval accuracy. This project aims to address this issue by exploring advanced visual representation that models the high-order information of image content. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the area of computer vision by developing a novel image retrieval framework. Expected outcomes include theory development on visual representation and more effective retrieval techniques. This should provide significant benefits, such as improving public information access services, facilitating environmental monitoring, and enhancing smart traffic management.Read moreRead less
Omniscient face recognition for uncooperative subjects. The outcomes of this project will enable effective video surveillance technology to be developed for use by law enforcement and national security agencies. It will lead to reliable identification of humans at a distance by automatically detecting and recognising faces, for use in counter-terrorism surveillance and commercial robot-human interfaces.
Assistive micro-navigation for vision impaired people. This project aims to develop novel algorithms to transform a simple camera into a smart sensor, that can enable a vision-impaired person to navigate freely and without additional aids in a crowded area. This project aims to develop novel algorithms to transform a simple camera into a smart sensor, that can enable a vision-impaired person to navigate freely and without additional aids in a crowded area. Such a smart sensor will be endowed with the capability to detect and locate obstacles, identify the walking path, recognise objects and traffic signs and convey step-by-step instructions to the user. The project outcomes are expected to improve the well-being and accessibility to public areas for vision-impaired people and reduce physical access disparities for this disadvantaged and vulnerable group. Furthermore, technologies developed in this project can potentially be adapted for use in related special navigation applications such as road safety, self-driving vehicles, and autonomous robots.Read moreRead less
