The promotion of physical activity, either through organised sport or active recreation, is a key public health strategy in this country. However, there is a risk of injury during this participation and efforts need to be undertaken to reduce this risk so that spor is safe for all. Sports injury prevention efforts to date in Australia have been severely hampered by a lack of evidence supporting currently advocated countermeasures. Sports injury prevention efforts to date in Australia have been severely hampered by a lack of evidence supporting currently advocated countermeasures. This concern has been recognised by both the NHMRC and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. It is imperative that we formally evaluate the effectiveness of sports injury countermeasures in the context of broad community level participation in sport, in contrast to previous research focussed on professional sport, and begin to deliver the preventive measures to the community. Australian football is a popular sport throughout Australia and it is associated with more medically-treated injuries than any other sport. Knee injuries are particularly common and can have severe consequences. One of the most commonly recommended knee injury prevention strategies is a well-designed exercise training program. Despite their potential to significantly reduce injury rates, the effectiveness of exercise training programs to prevent knee injuries in football, and indeed in most other sports, has not previously been assessed but has been identified as a priority research area by the NHMRC. INORMUS is a global multi-centre prospective cohort study in 40,000 patients with musculoskeletal trauma (e.g. fractures or dislocations) to determine the incidence of major trauma complications (i.e. mortality, re-operations, and infections) and to examine a number of factors that may predict early complications. This study will allow us to address fundamental questions for the millions of adults worldwide who experience trauma annually and will have immense public health implications.

Victims of Spinal Cord Injury are young, have severe paralysis, complex needs and high lifetime costs. Although urgent surgery greatly improves outcome, it is difficult to achieve because of logistical difficulties. To expand the time window for early surgery, it is proposed to immediately cool patients. This project will conduct the pilot studies necessary before commencing a clinical trial of immediate cooling and emergency decompression (ICED) in patients with cervical spinal cord injuries.

Injury is a leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents, and can have lifelong effects for survivors. This study will quantify how well children recover from injury, and how long this takes, to establish better measures of the population impact of injury sustained in childhood and adolescence. Summary
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of death and disability, and yet there are currently no effective treatments to improve outcome following such an insult. Our laboratory has developed a novel therapeutic compound, by identifying an endogenous neuroprotective molecule, in the amyloid precursor protein and then identifying the active site and modifying it to improve its efficacy. We will be testing this compound in our sheep model of TBI.

The majority of people with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) experience problems with mood and emotional regulation. We will use imaging to measure brain changes from TBI, and link these to risk of depression, as well as behavioural and molecular alterations. Study cohorts will include former international footballers, junior sports people and emergency patients presenting with an acute TBI. The project will inform current policy and provide a strong scientific basis for future work.

Presently, newborn infants with suspected encephalopathy are cooled, which modestly protects the brain against cellular injury.
