IOS are becoming increasingly important for organisations to remain competitive in a global marketplace. By using organisational motivations to better understand how to design and structure the processes for IOS implementation and set more realistic expectation, Australian organisations will be able to develop more effective, evidence-based methods for IOS implementation. The theory being tested is an original contribution in a growing area of information technology research. The data and rigorously tested research protocols developed will enhance Australia'a research standing, contribute to university teaching and researcher training, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Australian information technology industry. It will also be of benefit to the Australian software industry, since the outcome of the project is a software tool for cleaning XML data that is aimed at eventual commercialisation in a quickly growing area of the software market. The project will also boost international research collaboration through the involvement of an overseas partner investigator, and expand Australia's expertise in the new area of XML technology through the training of a Ph.D. student.Read moreRead less

Mobile communication is a frontier technology, and providing efficient mobile query services to the general public is critical in placing Australia as a leading country in mobile information services. The benefit to Australia nationally is beyond the telecommunication industry. The project will transform other Australian industries which rely on mobile information services, including emergency response services (eg. ambulance, police), mobile workforce and mobile commerce, transportation/traffic controller, bureau of meteorology, defence/army forces, financial market, as well as tourism and news. With the enormous growing of investment in these industries, this project will become a major contribution to national productivity and growth.Read moreRead less
Building a Prototype for Quality Information Retrieval from the Internet. This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain r ....Building a Prototype for Quality Information Retrieval from the Internet. This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain relevance feedback. The outcome will be a prototype system useful to business and industry though to guide our thinking we will use issues in constructing a quality digital library collection as a sounding board.

The SUITs network will develop critical mass in world-class, leading-edge research into the smart use of information and communication technology (ICT) through integration of research within the dispersed Australian ICT research community and through facilitating international linkages. The network will undertake research applicable in key sectors including the health, education, service, knowledge and media industries. The aim is to establish a higher order of coordination and collaboration in research into ICT applications.
The feasibility study proposed will engage key stakeholders, refine research goals and investigate linkage mechanisms to improve Australia's ICT research and its contribution to economic and social well-being.

Information quality problems are widespread in practice and have significant economic impacts. This project will refine and extend a rigorous theoretical framework for understanding information quality and develop and validate the Information Health Monitor, an instrument for assessing the quality of information within organisations. Existing approaches to information quality are mostly not rigorously defined and view information as a product. This work is significant and innovative as it is soundly based in existing theory, rigorously defined and views information as both a product and service. The instrument will enable organisations to better identify and address their information quality problems.Read moreRead less
UNLOCKING BENEFITS FROM ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS IN THE AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC SECTOR: Benefits Realisation in the Context of the Virtual Organisation. This study proposes to provide an innovative Virtual Organisation perspective to identify factors that can assist Australian government agencies to maximise the potential benefits from Enterprise System (ES) implementation. Study aims include: Identify and explicate major characteristics of the Virtual Organisation created through collaboration between government agency and (external) ES Implementation Partner; Identify and document features and constraints peculiar to ES implementation in the Australian public sector; Identify and explicate factors impacting on benefits realisation, relating these to theory from related fields; Highlight consensus and difference among stakeholders; Develop a validated, repeatable methodology for major impact studies; Inform ES research directions.Read moreRead less

Methodology for reasoning about Asynchronous Temporal Conditional Events (ATCE) obtains, complete with logical calculus for causal relations, reasoning about continuous time belief change, and markov chain algorithms calculating joint distributions of ATCE's.
Current techniques, including bayesian nets, are oblivious to temporal aspects; within our model they can be enhanced to recognize dynamic time changes. Ours is the first such unified model and first to link conditional objects with continuous time constraints.
Need for structures we propose arises in diagnostic reasoning, bayesian learning, temporal databases, and time-dependent data mining. Several commercial products (like Microsoft Office Assistant)could apply them forthwith.Read moreRead less
