A Program Of Methodological And Collaborative Research In Biostatistics And Population Health

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $264,081.00
    Summary
Biostatistics is a critical component of health and medical research, especially for studies in population health. However, there is an increasing gap between supply and demand for high-level biostatistical input. This proposal combines novel methodological research into methods for analysing incomplete data, with collaborative research applying new ideas and complex analyses to important health problems. The fellowship will facilitate my development as a future leader in this key area.

Optimising Asthma Management In Pregnancy For Optimal Infant Health

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $428,065.00
    Summary
Asthma affects 12% of pregnant women in Australia. These women are at increased risk of poor pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth and hospitalisation of the neonate. Reducing asthma attacks by providing optimal asthma management during pregnancy may lower these risks. This research will test whether a strategy which determines treatment changes based on a marker of airway inflammation, improves outcomes for maternal, neonatal and child health.

Improving The Health And Development Of High Risk Preterm Newborns

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $338,381.00
    Summary
Preterm children have more health and developmental problems than those born full term. Although we know the problems faced by those tiniest and most immature, more questions remain. What problems do they face as adults? What new treatments are available to improve their outcomes? Are the more “mature” preterms at risk as well? My research program aims to address these questions through the efforts of the Victorian Infant Collaborative Study team, a large research team that I lead.

    Nutritional Strategies For Allergy Prevention

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $437,034.00
    Summary
Allergic disease affects more than one in five Australian children. What foods a mother eats during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as when to introduce solid foods to babies, is thought to be critical in reducing the increasing burden of allergies in our Australian community. I hope to use this fellowship to discover what dietary factors put children at risk of developing a food allergy, and ways we can reduce that risk.

Fetal And Neonatal Therapy To Improve Perinatal Outcome And Long-term Neurodevelopment

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $214,032.00
    Summary
I am a consultant neonatologist with a half-time research appointment. Preventing perinatal morbidity and mortality is one of the greatest challenges in medicine today. My vision is to lead research into new fetal and neonatal therapies, foster collaborations with clinicians and scientists, and improve clinical practice. The scope of my research includes “brain-oriented” program of neonatal intensive care, neuroprotective strategies, and devising new fetal together with the obstetricians.

Developing An Evidence Base For The Psychological Care Of Children And Families Affected By Congenital Heart Disease.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $415,218.00
    Summary
Heart disease affects 1 in every 100 babies, making it one of the most common illnesses in infancy. Diagnosis and treatment of childhood heart disease often causes significant stress and trauma for children and their families. If support is not provided early, children can experience ongoing physical, emotional, and developmental problems. The Ethics And Politics Of Pharmaceutical Innovation And Translation

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $476,728.00
    Summary
I lead a research program on the ethics and politics of pharmaceutical innovation and translation: how medicines are developed, regulated, funded and taken up into practice. I aim to help policymakers to deal with conflicts among stakeholders. Over the next 4 years I will conduct a suite of research projects on topics of immediate significance to Australian policymakers; develop a new framework for pharmaceutical ethics and create a “Pharmaceutical Ethics and Politics Network.”
