Summary
The spread of cancer cells to other organs is a common cause of breast cancer-related death in women. Current therapies for advanced breast cancer are often palliative since the secondary tumours become resistant to the chemotherapy. Here, we are using preclinical models of advanced breast cancer to develop a treatment that should be effective in patients with secondary tumours and should reduce the risk of dying of this disease.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness, with sub-optimal treatment outcomes. New drugs are being designed to provide more effective treatment. To understand the effects of these drugs, we need to know which brain cells have the protein these new drugs target and which cells are affected in schizophrenia. Our project will determine the localisation of this drug target; this knowledge will help the development of better treatments for schizophrenia.

Summary
This project investigates a crucial but neglected element in the mechanism of chronic pain that develops after nerve and tissue injury. In particular, our aim is to establish whether expression of a chemical target of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline increases in the painful skin of affected patients, and whether medication that blocks this target alleviates inflammation and pain. If so, this may open up new avenues for treatment for previously intractable pain syndromes.

Normal development of our special sense organs is crucial for sight, taste, hearing, and balance. The balance system mediates important postural and eye reflexes that are essential for movement and vision. Abnormal development of the balance system results in dizziness, vertigo, gait deficits, and impaired learning and reading ability in children. This study will investigate how the organs of balance mature and connect with nerve fibres of the inner ear during human development.
