Quantitative measurement of Schizophrenia using Electrovestibulography. Schizophrenia was estimated to cost approximately $1.85billion in 2001 (0.3% of GDP and nearly $50k for each of the 37,000 Australians with the illness). Over one third of the cost is borne by sufferers and their carers. Misdiagnosis and incorrect therapy are common. To date quantitative assessment of Schizophrenics has been impossible making this tool potentially invaluable. An accurate diagnostic test could facilitate earlier diagnosis, more accurate treatment plans, and prevention of debilitating psychotic episodes for the sufferer. By being able to monitor drug efficacy the community can benefit by reduced drug costs, confinement times and hastened new drug development. Read moreRead less
Determination of lung morphology from X-ray phase contrast radiographs. Current methods of imaging the lung rely heavily on low contrast images obtained with chest radiography or computed tomography. This research will develop new X-ray phase contrast imaging techniques capable of providing a tenfold contrast increase over conventional chest radiography at a fraction of the X-ray dose of computed tomography. Methods of extracting quantitative information on lung morphology and pathology from phase contrast chest radiographs will be developed during this research. Eventual outcomes are likely to lead to improved methods of detecting lung disease and injury for both biomedical and clinical studies.Read moreRead less
Detection and Quantification of General Fetal Movements from Accelerometer Measurements using Nonstationary Signal Processing Techniques. There are approximately 1,750 fetal deaths per year in Australian with about one-third occurring late in gestation and without an apparent cause. The development of an automated system capable of long-term monitoring of fetal health will result in accurate diagnoses and prediction of future outcome. This will, in turn, allow early intervention by the clinician to reduce fetal deaths and enhance the chances of good outcomes with resultant savings in social and financial costs to the community. The development of such equipment would spawn future research into intervention treatments and contribute to Australia's position as a world leader in computerised health monitoring systems.Read moreRead less

Recent emergence of very large number of diverse sensors and sensor networks has the potential to impact on the quality of all areas of life. Scientific challenges in realizing this potential is significant because of the multidisciplinary nature and complexities involved. This research network builds on the best scientific talent available in the interdisciplinary areas (biology, mathematics, statistics, computing, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering) with the best overseas scientific teams to solve the underlying scientific problems to enable the Australian industry to exploit and apply this technology in areas of defense, health care and environment.Read moreRead less
A high throughput Grid based environment for real time bio-medical imaging. Together with Leica, we will build a virtual microscope facility that will provide substantial functionality not currently available in Australia. Together with Leica, we will build a virtual microscope facility that will provide substantial functionality not currently available in Australia. This facility will have major national and international impact on bio-medical imaging. The software solutions and infrastructure, developed as part of this program will have considerable commercial and strategic value in their own right. One guaranteed avenue for exploitation of the software will clearly be through our industry partner, Leica. Importantly, our proposal consolidates a critical mass of expertise connecting biomedical with computer science, thereby addressing a well-recognised constraint that to date has limited their national and international impact.Read moreRead less
