2026 ARDC Annual Survey is now open!

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure services including Reasearch Link Australia.

We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Harnessing The Power Of Elite Sport Sponsorship To Promote Healthy Eating By Young Adults

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $304,220.00
    Summary
Concerns have been raised about the role of unhealthy food sponsorship of elite sport in promoting unhealthy diets to vast numbers of the public, including young adults who are avid spectators of sport. This innovative project consists of two studies which systematically investigate the utility of alternative, health-oriented sport sponsorship models and counter-advertising strategies in promoting healthier diets among young adults.

The Effect Of Iron Supplementation In Pregnancy On Child Cognitive Development

During fetal life the brain grows very rapidly and animal studies have shown that inadequate iron nutrition of mothers during pregnancy can result in permanent structural and developmental problems in the offspring. Although this has not been examined in human infants, new studies suggest that the iron stores of the mother in pregnancy are an important determinant of the baby's iron stores during the first year of life. It may be that the critical period where iron nutrition influences later development is in fetal life (during pregnancy). We have the opportunity to test whether iron nutrition in fetal life influences childhood development by assessing the cognitive abilities of children who were in our earlier study of iron supplementation in pregnancy. Our aim is to assess the children at 4 years to determine if iron nutrition in pregnancy predicts development. This may change the dietary advice we give pregnant women to ensure they give their babies the best start in life.

Early Life And Contemporary Influences On Body Composition, Mental Health, And Chronic Disease Risk Markers In The Aboriginal Birth Cohort

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $3,117,044.00
    Summary
The Aboriginal Birth Cohort study has been following the health of Aboriginal babies in the Northern Territory for the last 30 years. The participants were healthy till adolescence, but overweight and risk factors of diseases such as diabetes, kidney and heart disease are emerging. This follow-up will show when and whether these risk factors develop into disease, which factors are protective and which identify early those most at risk of developing diseases that cause the gap in life expectancy.

Mechanisms Of Intestinal And Systemic Iron Homeostasis In Early Infancy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $485,835.00
    Summary
Iron is essential trace element for normal health. Iron requirements are particularly high during early postnatal life to meet the needs of the growing infant. To accommodate these needs, intestinal iron absorption is extremely high at this time. We have previously shown that the iron absorption mechanism during suckling differs from that in adults and this project explores that mechanism in more detail. These studies have important implications for infant nutrition and dietary supplementation.

Mechanisms Of Intestinal Iron Absorption And Consequences Of Iron Supplementation During The Perinatal Period

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $526,878.00
    Summary
Iron intake is particularly high during pregnancy and in the newborn to meet the requirements of the growing fetus and neonate. While it is widely recommended that women take iron supplements at this time, too much iron may adversely affect pregnancy outcome. The aim of this study is to understand the factors controlling iron intake in the perinatal and the consequences of excess iron. This will provide the physiological information required to make rational decisions about iron supplementation.

Using Lessons From The United Kingdom To Improve The Reproductive Health Of Aboriginal Adolescent Women

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $419,768.00
    Summary
I will examine if parity and pre and post natal exercise can prevent urinary incontinence among older women in a large cohort study in the United Kingdom and use these skills to examine the contraceptive use of Aboriginal adolescent females and influence pre and post natal programs in four Aboriginal communities. The more knowledge and support Aboriginal adolescent females have the higher chances of them making informed decisions about their reproductive health.

Epidemiological Approaches To Understanding The Causes And Prevention Of Chronic Disease

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $546,451.00
    Summary
This research program aims to improve understanding of the causes of chronic disease in Australians from childhood to old age. It will also help determine the effectiveness of workplace health and wellbeing programs in preventing disease and the feasibility of reducing mortality in older Australians through vitamin D supplementation.

Improving Chronic Disease Outcomes For Indigenous Australians: Causes,Interventions, System Change

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $8,788,853.00
    Summary
Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases occur in epidemic proportions among Indigenous Australians, with very early age of onset and high rates of preventable complications. This Program will bring together a multi skilled team of researchers with Indigenous partners to better understand the development of these conditions, and to guide the development of diet, lifestyle, clinical and health system interventions in order to minimise their adverse impacts and improve health overall.
