Mental disorders such as anxiety and depression are more common among people who are socially disadvantaged (eg, living in poverty, welfare recipients, lone parents). This project seeks to understand why disadvantaged groups are more likely to have mental health problems, explores social differences in access to mental health services, and develops methods to reduce mental health problems that take account of these social differences and promotes greater fairness and equity.

Survival times for people diagnosed with colorectal cancer depend on where people live; typically lower in rural and socio-economically disadvantaged areas. However we know very little about why these inequalities exist. This study, the first of its type in Australia, examines how much of the survival inequalities are due to the characteristics of individuals, and how much is due to the characteristics of the area itself. Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases occur in epidemic proportions among Indigenous Australians, with very early age of onset and high rates of preventable complications. This Program will bring together a multi skilled team of researchers with Indigenous partners to better understand the development of these conditions, and to guide the development of diet, lifestyle, clinical and health system interventions in order to minimise their adverse impacts and improve health overall.
