Elucidating the interactions between drought tolerance and photoprotection in plants. The 2002-03 drought cost Australia in the order of $10Billion and 70,000 jobs. Associated with reduced rainfall is increased sunlight irradiance, which exacerbates the reduction in crop yield due to the combined damage of a water deficit and oxidative damage caused by the excess light. Plants have networks of responses to minimise damage due to drought and excess light. We have identified a novel class of genes ....Elucidating the interactions between drought tolerance and photoprotection in plants. Associated with reduced rainfall is increased sunlight irradiance, which exacerbates the reduction in crop yield due to the combined damage of a water deficit and oxidative damage caused by the excess light. Plants have networks of responses to minimise damage due to drought and excess light. We have identified a novel class of genes that optimise or alter different aspects of these networks and we wish to define the nature of that optimisation to determine how it could be transfered to crop plants.Read moreRead less
Plant Genes Conferring Resistance to Ultraviolet Radiation. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation induces DNA damage that can decrease plant growth and productivity. Our aim is to begin deciphering the mechanisms responsible for the UV resistance phenotype in plants by: 1) isolating genes that control processing of UV-induced DNA damage; 2) determining the influence of UV on gene activity; and 3) elucidating the functions and essential interactions of the gene products. The results of this study will help ....Plant Genes Conferring Resistance to Ultraviolet Radiation. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation induces DNA damage that can decrease plant growth and productivity. The results of this study will help us understand how these genes operate to produce the UV resistance phenotype. This new knowledge will facilitate eventual engineering of plants to increase agricultural productivity by enhancing resistance to solar UV radiation.Read moreRead less
MicroRNA control of gene expression and development in plants. Controlling a gene's activity is fundamental in biotechnology, from dissecting a gene's function to introducing desired traits in crop plants. Recently a new class of genes have been identified that are 'master-regulators' able to control the activity of many genes, and through this, they can ultimately control how an organism develops and functions. Recently a new class of genes have been identified that are 'master-regulators' able to control the activity of many genes, and through this, they can ultimately control how an organism develops and functions. By understanding how these genes operate and the extent of their influence, not only will we gain greater insights into the gene regulatory networks required for multicellular life, but how we may develop methods of controlling gene activity that will have tremendous biotechnological applications.Read moreRead less

Chloroplast pigments as developmental signals. This project will define roles of chloroplast pigments in cellular signaling, plant growth and development. Effective communication between the chloroplast and the nucleus is essential for maintaining viability and productivity of the cell. Similarly, long-distance signaling is required for coordinated growth and development and we hypothesise that pigments also have importance in this role. Our proposal brings together the multidisciplinary skills ....Chloroplast pigments as developmental signals. Our proposal brings together the multidisciplinary skills and resources of six investigators to define how certain carotenoids and chlorophyll precursors regulate gene expression and to determine the identity of what is most likely a carotenoid derivative with hormonal properties that controls lateral branch growth.Read moreRead less
Accelerated Domestication of Australian Grass Species Using Molecular Tools. The development of new food crops from the Australian flora will provide opportunities for new sustainable agricultural and food industries in Australia. The project targets the accelerated domestication of native species with lower tillage and fertiliser requirements, better water use efficiencies and increased salt, shade, frost and/or drought tolerances than the current introduced cereal and fodder crops. This will ....Accelerated Domestication of Australian Grass Species Using Molecular Tools. This will directly benefit regional Australia. The technologies developed in the project will have wide application to accelerated domestication of other Australian plants (for agriculture and food production in Australia and internationally) and to plants found in other parts of the world.Read moreRead less

This project will extend collaboration between Murdoch and UWA by provision of advanced facilities for plant genetic analysis and gene discovery. This will be achieved by purchase of novel equipment for discovery and analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs - single base changes between individual plants) that mark differences in their properties, and by purchase of equipment to underpin gene discovery and analysis of expression. Provision of this equipment will enable full use of plant growth facilities now under construction, lead to advanced technologies of plant genetic analysis, and discovery of new basic information on fundamental plant processes.Read moreRead less

This project is part of the National Priorities "Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries." Using innovative plant metabolic engineering technologies combined with sophisticated computer modeling we are generating green plants that produce renewable, biodegradable, bioplastics possessing properties such that they are suitable replacements for petroleum-derived products in many applications. During the course of these studies, we are increasing our basic level of understanding of plant metabolism of important bioenergy crops. The production of renewable, bioplastics in sugarcane will help to diversify the Australian sugarcane industry by providing a value-added product with significant world-wide markets.Read moreRead less
