Summary
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease associated with increased risk of mortality, severely impacting the quality of life for those affected. A large number of genes have been implicated in SLE susceptibility, however we know little of the genetic mechanisms proceeding disease onset. This project uses state of the art technology to define the role of genetic variants in SLE susceptibility and identify their importance across patients of different ethnic backgrounds.

Summary
Recent advances in high-throughput, next-generation, DNA sequencing allows biologists to simultaneously analyse the differences in thousands of different genes across affected and unaffected individuals. However, it produces an overwhelming amount of data and making sense of this deluge of data is a current challenge. Overcoming this challenge will enable scientific discoveries of pathogenic variants of disease, potentially providing an opportunity for targeted drug development.

Summary
My research project combines two powerful new technologies, spectral domain-optical coherence tomography and the genome-wide association study, to investigate the physical and genetic characteristics of the optic nerve head in humans. Results from this work will help identify new glaucoma risk genes, increasing sensitivity and specificity for predicting glaucoma and expand our understanding of the disease mechanism allowing for the development of new treatments.

Summary
The monkey parasite P. knowlesi is an increasing cause of human malaria in SE Asia. My studies on the clinical epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of non-severe and severe malaria in Malaysia have changed policy. I will further define the clinical epidemiology of malaria patients in this area over time, assess risk factors for knowlesi malaria, and evaluate the role of human and parasite factors in disease severity, and treatment for reducing acute kidney injury in knowlesi malaria.
The notion that happiness is an important component of mental health is gaining popularity. Researchers have reported that happiness benefits physical health, however there is currently limited research. In addition, there is limited research assessing the affect of physical health on happiness. Using epidemiological methods, I will investigate the relationship between happiness and health in a database that has measurements collected at three time points in the same 15,000 people over 15 years.
