This project addresses a critical issue in IT investment and productivity. Current theoretical models of user training and acceptance have not contributed to the effectiveness of implementing new integrated enterprise wide systems. This study will identify key indiviudal differences that predict user motivation to learn and utilize such systems under mandatory conditions. A longitudinal study in two field settings will test the impact of selected interventions on task performance following training. The outcomes will inform Australian industry on models of effective implementation and provide guidance to increase the productivity of personnel using software systems.Read moreRead less
Understanding the impact of enterprise system use on system performance. To optimise organizational benefits, resource intensive enterprise systems must be appropriately used by all user cohorts. This study investigates the impact of system-use on system success. System-use patterns derived for all key user cohorts across the lifecycle phases will create management matrices to assist organizations maximise system-use.
A clinically valid simulator with tactile sensing to train specialists to perform cochlea implantation. This project aims to create a medical simulation system with tactile sensing for cochlear implant operations. The developed system will provide an opportunity to study cochlear implantation process and examine its effect in a patient before it is carried out. It will be also used to train ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialists in cochlear implantation, thus replacing the current costly and no ....A clinically valid simulator with tactile sensing to train specialists to perform cochlea implantation. A country like Australia with its twin disadvantages of distance from its large markets and small population as its own market has to found its goals in its wealth production on its ability to compete at the high value-adding loci of the economy. Design is a precursor to superior products and is one of the nation's high value-adding wealth generating activities. This project aims to lay the foundations for a new class of design support tools that have the capacity to be used at a variety of stages in the design process including those stages where major decisions are being taken. This will have the potential to improve the efficacy and the efficiency of Australian design and hence make it more globally competitive.Read moreRead less

This project will link Australian researchers with a major multi-national IT company. The engagement of world-class personnel from Microsoft will provide unprecedented opportunities for graduate students to experience research in both an academic and an industrial setting. The participation of Microsoft product division offers the potential to transform the outcomes of this project into widely-used software solutions. The project will pave the way for more widespread and reliable evidenced-based computer-aided diagnosis and image-guided treatment. It will produce well-trained and sought-after graduates and research associates with extensive inter-disciplinary knowledge of medical image analysis and high-performance computing.Read moreRead less
Algorithms for geometric Turán-type problems and network visualization. Recent technological advances have large data sets, in a data deluge. Some of the most critical data sets are networks; examples abound in Systems Biology, Social Network Analysis, and Software Engineering. This project aims for algorithms to construct readable pictures of these networks, and thus make the data easier for humans to understand.
Systems to Support Knowledge Creation in Learning Organisations. The proposed project will investigate the capacity of IT to support knowledge making for innovation in modern organisations. Prototypes of three flexible computer-based systems will be iteratively developed and evaluated for their support of knowledge workers in three different industries. The investigators are experienced in socio-technical approaches, which will be used to emphasise the integration between people and IT systems ....Systems to Support Knowledge Creation in Learning Organisations. The proposed project will investigate the capacity of IT to support knowledge making for innovation in modern organisations. Prototypes of three flexible computer-based systems will be iteratively developed and evaluated for their support of knowledge workers in three different industries. The investigators are experienced in socio-technical approaches, which will be used to emphasise the integration between people and IT systems. An interpretive study will determine how the systems can contribute to organisational learning, performance, and responsiveness to change. The outcomes will inform the designers of such systems and show Australian organisations how to gain competitive advantage by expanding their capacity to learn.Read moreRead less

Visualisation is a key way to understand networks. This project plans to develop a new paradigm for this task. Using modern generic constrained optimisation techniques it will produce layouts for small graphs whose quality is similar to that produced by hand, something that is not possible with current approaches. These algorithms will then be used to visualise large graphs. Instead of simply trying to visualise every node and link in the graph. The project will develop techniques to extract useful subsets or abstractions that are as small possible, yet sufficient to answer targeted queries. The techniques for producing small high-quality diagrams will then be applicable to presenting these focused visualisations.Read moreRead less

As computers become more pervasive, people will inevitably interact with a wide range of networked appliances. This proposal aims to develop prototype enabling technology to allow appliances to operate cooperatively and seamlessly with minimum human input - 'invisible intelligence'. Experience-based computing is the key concept underlying the technology. A prototype 'operating experience' will be developed to sit on top of existing operating systems that will allow appliances to join and leave networks, and interact with other appliances. Also to be developed are a modeling framework, language and methodology for specifying appliance behaviour, and allow learning from experience.Read moreRead less
