The molecular role of ADAM12 in maintenance of skeletal muscle, myogenesis and adipogenesis. The ability of muscle to adapt to meet functional demands is essential for mobility in normal daily life, in ageing well, in individuals with muscle diseases and nerve damage and in athletes. The ability of muscle to change its cellular composition is desirable for the livestock industry. Knowledge of how genes in muscle cells are regulated to adapt to demands has significant implications for public health and economic ....Mouse models for the identification of factors involved in muscle adaptation. The wellbeing and sustainability of Australia's population are national priority issues. The primary outcome of the Initiative will be a plan for a Network that will promote collaboration among researchers across universities and disciplines whose work focuses on the following issues relating to Australia's population: family and work; health and longevity; immigration and identity; and environment and settlement. Australia will experience a significant increase in the proportion of its population that is over 65 years of age over the next 50 years. There will be an increased demand for health services related to injury from falls unless effective preventive strategies are put in place. Loss of muscle mass contributes to falls, so development of preventative strategies has the potential for considerable benefits. This PhD project examines a possible mechanism by which oxidative stress causes muscle wasting. An appropriately tailored therapy to minimise oxidative stress has the potential to ameliorate loss of muscle mass.
