The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.
Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

This project combines the latest laser scanning technology, available through the ARC-funded LASCAN consortium, with satellite-based and digital photogrammetric survey techniques to develop a unique methodology for precise 3D recording of such sites. Records of archaeological test sites in Greece will contain unprecedented detail, comprising point clouds of greater than five million individual measurements, and spectral information in the infrared and visible wavebands. The large volume of data collected will be managed in a specially designed spatial database, accessible to the general public.Read moreRead less

The incorporation of humans as decision-makers into a complex system comprising of many autonomous agents is becoming increasingly important in areas such as defence, search-and-rescue, special emergency services, bush-fire and ecology management. This project will address how human decisions are made in such systems through the formulation and demonstration of innovative algorithms which model the operator decision making process. Generating solutions to this increasingly important area will provide Australia's industry and community services the necessary knowledge for deploying such systems and thus improving service effectiveness, as well as the implementation of autonomous systems into new areas and thus increasing economic growth.Read moreRead less
How, What and Who in Human Communication: Movement of Face and Voice. The aim of this project is to identify the essential characteristics of tone, affect, and identity from face and voice using a combination of signal processing, biological, and behavioural techniques in order to develop a comprehensive model of auditory-visual speech processing and communication. This research will significantly improve understanding of the basis of auditory-visual perception and production in tonal languages ....How, What and Who in Human Communication: Movement of Face and Voice. The aim of this project is to identify the essential characteristics of tone, affect, and identity from face and voice using a combination of signal processing, biological, and behavioural techniques in order to develop a comprehensive model of auditory-visual speech processing and communication. This research will significantly improve understanding of the basis of auditory-visual perception and production in tonal languages and in affective communication, facilitate links between neurophysiological processes and auditory-visual speech processing; and contribute to applications in automatic person recognition, automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech systems, and talking head aids for the hearing impaired.Read moreRead less

This project is concerned with developing intelligent technologies that support human interaction through handheld devices, connected to wireless digital networks. Intelligent software assistants running on these devices will interact with one another in order to coordinate the activities of multiple users. Such automated coordination may facilitate scheduling of meetings, collaboration among different members of a team, and negotiating conflicts that may arise between the activities of different connected users. This will enable context-dependent task support and coordination of workers involved in industrial applications involving mobility and dynamism.Read moreRead less
Response style heterogeneity in empirical marketing research. This study aims to improve the validity of empirical studies by accounting for different ways in which respondents answer questionnaires (response styles) while analysing the data. Response styles have been shown to depend on the cultural background of respondents. This work therefore is of particular importance in Australia given the large number of cultural backgrounds residents come from. The proposed method will be empirically tested in the context of surveys investigating sustainable tourism, public acceptance of alternative water sources and volunteering, three areas which are central to maintaining Australia's environmental sustainability and providing social and environmental services which are not covered by the commercial sector.Read moreRead less
Mid-Holocene coral reef bleaching and recovery in the South China Sea and its implications for the modern Great Barrier Reef. Strong evidence shows the mid-Holocene was 1-2 ºC warmer than the present, implying a greater probability for coral bleaching. Strong evidence shows the mid-Holocene was 1-2 ºC warmer than the present, implying a greater probability for coral bleaching. We have collected well-preserved mid-Holocene reef corals from the northern South China Sea, which contain growth hiatuses reflecting bleaching and mortality. We propose to use high-resolution Sr/Ca, d18O and microstructure analysis and high-precision U-series dating of coral growth bands to determine the season and sea-surface temperature when each growth hiatus occurred and to establish the timing and duration of the growth hiatus. Reconstructed mid-Holocene coral bleaching history has important implications for management of the Great Barrier Reef during predicted global warming.Read moreRead less
Insect host/vector genetic responses to rhabdovirus infection. Rhabdoviruses cause important diseases in humans, animals and plants. Rhabdoviruses cause important diseases in humans, animals and plants. These viruses are transmitted by insect vectors in which they persist and propagate, an intimate and specific association. Insect-rhabdovirus interactions will be studied at the molecular level using a planthopper-maize rhabdovirus model. Insect genes specifically induced by rhabdovirus infection as well as the viral genes themselves will be identified and characterized using genomics and bioinformatics tools. We will extend the same approaches to a comparative analysis of these planthopper genes with other insect-rhabdovirus systems under investigation in our institutes. Identification of viral genes expressed in insects, the insect genes that respond to virus infection, and interpretation of the roles of these genes in insects, may indicate new opportunities to control serious plant and animal diseases through control of virus transmission.Read moreRead less

Macquarie University and the University of Copenhagen have expertise in fluorescence detection and whole cell biosensors respectively. The project will take advantage of these skills and develop a sensitive assay for monitoring biosensor bacteria in soil. The technology will be significant as it will enable real time analysis of antibiotic production in situ through the detection of GFP expression. This work will then be used to isolate new antibiotic produces and will be extended to research into the bioavailability of toxic compounds and stress. An existing collaboration between the two institutions will be extended enabling the transfer and application of biosensor technology to Australia.Read moreRead less
