This project aims to co-design a social, interactive and visual internet search interface for people with intellectual disability. Enabling choice and independence is key to the new National Disability Insurance Scheme, but people with intellectual disability are effectively excluded from much of the Web. This project will investigate ways to access and provide information using technologies such as interactive avatars, virtual worlds and trusted social support. New interfaces will enable people with intellectual disability to inform themselves, make choices and foster their social inclusion. Expected outcomes are new search interface technology, a theoretical framework and new Web accessibility guidelines.Read moreRead less
A pictorial communication framework for inclusion. A picture can tell a thousand words; many people with an intellectual disability can only communicate with pictures and are otherwise isolated. A picture can tell a thousand words; many people with an intellectual disability can only communicate with pictures and are otherwise isolated. This project will research how computers can understand and facilitate a rich pictorial communication between people and person to machine, thereby supporting inclusion. This will be achieved by inclusively co-designing with people with ID and members of the community: a) an audio-visual accessible search tool, b) a pictorial communication device, and c) a visual inclusive social network. These applications will inform future innovations for everyone, and allow citizens with ID to access online information, participate in community activities and be included in the workplace.Read moreRead less
Growing Sustainable Regions: Developing a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework. Given the challenges facing rural and regional Australia, it is essential that communities and decision-makers have the information and resources to make informed and sustainable decisions. While there is a plethora of data that can provide this evidence-base, it is often complex, disorganised and inaccessible to those who need it. Hence, to facilitate smart information use, this research develops and implement ....Growing Sustainable Regions: Developing a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework. While there is a plethora of data that can provide this evidence-base, it is often complex, disorganised and inaccessible to those who need it. Hence, to facilitate smart information use, this research develops and implements a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework and decision support modelling tool that integrates environmental, economic and social data into a single user-friendly source. This will provide a platform for evidence-based decision-making that will lead to a sustainable future for rural and regional Australia.Read moreRead less
Developing a framework for measuring Indigenous research benefit. The proposed project aims to bring together researchers and Indigenous community members to develop a collaborative framework for measuring research benefit. The proposed project aims to bring together researchers and Indigenous community members to develop a collaborative framework for measuring research benefit. It aims to address two main 'Closing the Gap' priority areas, Indigenous health and education, by questioning what constitutes research benefit from an Indigenous perspective, and how can the benefits of research be measured to ensure sustainable outcomes for Indigenous communities. The innovation of this project lies in its methodology which endeavours to unpack the benefit construct from an Indigenous worldview to enable future research projects to be designed with outcomes in mind that are acceptable and valued by Indigenous beneficiaries and be informed by Indigenous Knowledges.Read moreRead less
Building An Indigenist Health Humanities Collective. This proposal aims to develop Indigenist Health Humanities as a new and innovative field of inquiry, building an intellectual collective capable of bridging the knowledge gap that hinders current efforts to close the gap in Indigenous health inequality. Bringing together health and the humanities through the particularity of Indigenous scholarship, a deeper understanding of the human experience of health will be developed alongside a greater u ....Building An Indigenist Health Humanities Collective. This proposal aims to develop Indigenist Health Humanities as a new and innovative field of inquiry, building an intellectual collective capable of bridging the knowledge gap that hinders current efforts to close the gap in Indigenous health inequality. Bringing together health and the humanities through the particularity of Indigenous scholarship, a deeper understanding of the human experience of health will be developed alongside a greater understanding of the enablers to building a transdisciplinary collective of Indigenous health researchers. The potential benefits include a more sustainable, relational and ethical approach to advancing new knowledge, advancing research careers and advancing health outcomes for Indigenous people. The goal of the project is to develop and validate a new theory for how information systems can be designed to assist organisations in becoming innovative. Technological innovation is designed to increase productivity and economic growth, but knowledge is lacking about how information systems can meaningfully support organisations in becoming innovative. The goal of this project is to develop and test a theory of ‘innovation systems’ that would describe design principles for information systems that provide effective and efficient support to organisational innovation processes. The expected project outcomes would assist the development of new systems to support organisational innovations, the management of innovation initiatives to increase productivity and growth, and the effective assessment of technologies to support innovation.Read moreRead less
Digital noticeboards for remote Aboriginal communities: bringing web 2.0 participation to non-western cultures with low English and technical literacy. Remote Aboriginal communities suffer from geographic and cultural isolation. Web 2.0 offers a solution yet is ill-suited to traditional collective cultures, those with low English and technical literacy, and the poor. This project will produce novel public web-enabled touchscreen noticeboards and table tops suited to traditional cultures.
Scalable Cross-Media Hashing for Searching Heterogeneous Data Sources. This project aims to use novel indexing and search approaches to realise the value of multimedia data. The ever-increasing availability and heterogeneity of multimedia data are calling for new approaches to search information across different media types and data sources. This project aims to enable accurate and real-time cross-media searches from billions of multimedia objects collected from various media sources by tackling ....Scalable Cross-Media Hashing for Searching Heterogeneous Data Sources. This project aims to use novel indexing and search approaches to realise the value of multimedia data. The ever-increasing availability and heterogeneity of multimedia data are calling for new approaches to search information across different media types and data sources. This project aims to enable accurate and real-time cross-media searches from billions of multimedia objects collected from various media sources by tackling the heterogeneity and scalability issues. Expected outcomes include scalable cross-media hashing techniques to capture implicit correlations existing in heterogeneous data and embed high-dimensional features into short binary codes; new binary code indexing and ranking schemes to further improve search speed and quality; and a large-scale cross-media system to evaluate methods and demonstrate the practical value.Read moreRead less
Realising the value of mobile videos with context awareness. Innovative approaches to analysing online video content and context will lead to new ways of interacting with video in the mobile world. This project will aim to develop real-time mobile systems for enabling rich and highly dynamic digital video experiences through context-aware indexing, retrieval and consumption of mobile videos.
