This project aims to enable deeper understandings of the role of Australia’s principal public service broadcaster in the lives of audience members across the country, and the community needs and interests that have shaped it. The project, in partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the National Archives of Australia, is significant because it will uncover and interpret paper records relating to listeners and viewers during the broadcaster’s first 50 years. Expected outcomes include an enlarged and more discoverable media archive for the benefit of researchers, industry and all Australians; an innovative audience-centred approach to the ABC’s history; and enhanced academic, archival and media collaborations. This project is a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of the multifarious reincarnations of Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp across the world's film, theatre, television and advertising industries over the last nine decades. The project examines the appeal of Chaplin's Tramp in different languages and cultures, and the ways in which the figure has been adapted, translated, reconfigured and indigenised for local audiences and their individual contexts and traditions. The Internationalisation Of Chaplin's Tramp draws on theoretical perspectives and methodologies from screen studies, history, the visual arts, anthropology and cultural studies and the writing and production practices of documentary film.Read moreRead less
Utilitarian Filmmaking in Australia 1945 - 1980. The project plans to discover, document, analyse and compile a lasting archive of utilitarian filmmaking in Australia. 'Utilitarian' describes client-sponsored, instructional and governmental filmmaking existing outside the conventional theatrical contexts by which cinema is usually defined. Focused on the post-World War Two decades before the proliferation of video in the late 1970s, the project aims to highlight previously-unstudied aspects of t ....Utilitarian Filmmaking in Australia 1945 - 1980. The project plans to discover, document, analyse and compile a lasting archive of utilitarian filmmaking in Australia. 'Utilitarian' describes client-sponsored, instructional and governmental filmmaking existing outside the conventional theatrical contexts by which cinema is usually defined. Focused on the post-World War Two decades before the proliferation of video in the late 1970s, the project aims to highlight previously-unstudied aspects of the media industries. This is designed to deliver new knowledge of the skills and subject matter that sustained filmmaking, communication and education in Australia during a time when conventional scholarship assumes there was almost no significant filmmaking.Read moreRead less

This project aims to discover how contemporary screens represent deafness and how sign language cinema filters Deaf and non-ableist perspectives. Partnering with Deaf Connect and the National Film and Sound Archive, this project expects to provide a transnational, transdisciplinary framework for analysing Deaf language and culture on screen in terms of completeness and empowerment. Expected outcomes include capacity building for emerging Deaf scholars, inclusive innovations in film and language studies and new opportunities for Deaf/hearing dialogue and cohesion. This should lead to diverse benefits such as increased Deaf wellbeing and enhanced capacity to harness screen cultures to support and reflect the diversity of Deaf experience.Read moreRead less
Peepshows: Love Letters and the Death Penalty in a Sensation Trial and its Cultural Legacies. Criminal trials are primarily studied by cultural historians and legal scholars without reference to eachother. Criminal trials are primarily studied by cultural historians and legal scholars without reference to eachother. My aim is to produce a feminist cultural history of a sensation trial and its legacies that addresses the legal, historical and cultural dimensions of the case. The monograph will explore how a woman was hanged on the flimsy ?evidence? of her love letters, and how later critics and cultural producers used popular forms to speak back to law. The project significance stems from its multi-disciplinary approach, and the innovative synchronic and diachronic framewor, which will provide a model for later cultural studies of trials.Read moreRead less

Exciting two way exchanges of methods, problems and solutions have emerged. This project aims to settle fundamental questions in the interaction between these two fields.Read moreRead less
Asymptotic Geometric Analysis and Learning Theory. Learning Theory is used in various real-world applications in diverse research areas, ranging from Biology (e.g. DNA sequencing) to Information Sciences. Therefore, having a deep understanding of fundamental questions in Learning Theory, and in particular, pin-pointing the parameters that make a learning problem hard would have a significant practical impact. Therefore, having a deep understanding of fundamental questions in Learning Theory, and in particular, pin-pointing the parameters that make a learning problem hard would have a significant practical impact. This projects aims to achieve this goal, and in addition, we expect it would have a high theoretical value, as the questions we shall address are of independent interest to pure mathematicians.Read moreRead less
