Driving Large Scale Live Internet Broadcasting of Streaming Video. Recent experience of Internet service providers has seen a booming market demand for live Internet broadcasting services. Live broadcasting of high-profile events, such as the Live Earth concerts in July 2007 by MSN, has drawn a global audience of the order of millions of viewers across the Internet. The technology developed in this project will drastically reduce Internet bandwidth consumption for provisioning such large-scale Internet broadcasting services while meeting user satisfaction with guaranteed Quality of Service. It is crucial for Australia to invest in this frontier technology since Australian service providers rely on expensive Internet infrastructure to communicate with major data hubs in other continents.

This project will develop a concurrent engineering framework for the design and optimisation of photonic devices, specifically microstructured fibres and Bragg gratings. Novel fibre designs and pulse manipulation grating designs for the telecommunications, automotive and sensing sectors will be developed. New algorithms for the analysis of perturbations and imperfections arising from manufacturing processes will be incorporated into an integrated optimisation framework that uses evolutionary algorithms. Neural networks will be trained to learn the underlying relationships between structural design parameters and device performance parameters. The new concurrent engineering framework will also identify the critical points in fabrication technologies impeding further progress.

The current communication infrastructure market is one of the largest market segments in the world. However, it is evident that the current Internet provides limited support for a multitude of current, emerging and future services that require multicasting support (worldwide, enhanced IP service revenues are forecast to grow to $104.4 billion in 2005). The introduction of enhanced multicasting services will result in lowered input costs to industries and consumers with a wider choice of enhanced services. The mechanisms developed in this project will allow service providers to raise additional revenue and differentiate themselves by offering a wide range of enhanced services.

The current Wireless Mesh Network has limited capability to support for a multitude of current, emerging and future services . The mechanisms developed in this project will allow service providers to raise additional revenue and differentiate themselves by offering a wide range of enhanced services. Our research will help efficient sharing of network resources (such as bandwidth) between multiple users of multimedia communications using broadcasting and multicasting protocols.
