Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$304,298.00
Summary
The Federal Government is currently working to design a new system for the labelling of Australian foods. The system is intended to help consumers make healthier food choices that will reduce the risks of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and other serious health problems. This project will test the effectiveness of the proposed system at helping people make better food purchases. The information obtained will be used to directly inform government policy making
Investigating Dietary Vitamin D In The Australian Population
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$386,476.00
Summary
Vitamin D deficiency is a significant public health issue in Australia: almost one in four adults, and one in five adolescents, are vitamin D deficient. Although vitamin D can be obtained from sun exposure and diet, we know very little about dietary vitamin D in Australia. This project will determine how much vitamin D is in Australian foods, how much people get from their usual diets, and whether increasing vitamin D in foods would be a safe and effective way to reduce vitamin D deficiency.

Providing Real-time Feedback On Diet Quality In Remote Indigenous Communities To Support Policy Makers And Other Key Stakeholders In Making Decisions To Improve Food Supply And Access In Remote Indigenous Communities.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
Community leaders and other decision makers have indicated that real-time feedback on diet quality in their communities is fundamental to support them in improving the food supply. This project will provide critical evidence to support this. I will consult with local stakeholders to develop visual reports that have evidence-based information on diet quality and strategies to improve the food supply, and will test whether the provision of this information is effective in improving diet quality.
IMPROVING THE FOOD SUPPLY TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF NUTRITION-RELATED CHRONIC DISEASE
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$338,945.00
Summary
My project will examine the healthiness of the Australian food supply with the goal of identifying where reformulation activities will have the greatest impact on the health of Australians. Improving The Healthiness Of The Foods In Australian Supermarkets
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
This project proposes to better understand the role of supermarkets on influencing the healthiness of the food supply. Three studies are planned which evaluate the evidence for the effect of supermarket standards on the food supply, determine whether providing nutritional data to a supermarket can change the healthiness of their food products, and identify factors that influence the development and use of supermarket standards to improve their foods.
Developing A National Salt Reduction Program For India
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$935,028.00
Summary
Excess dietary salt is a leading cause of premature strokes and heart attacks around the world. India, the world’s second most populous nation has no coordinated national salt reduction program and lacks key data upon which to formulate a strategy. This research will bring together Australian experts in the field with leading Indian researchers to make the baseline assessments required to formulate and commence population-wide salt reduction efforts in India.
Early Antecedents Of Food Allergy: Defining The Pathways Underlying Very Early Sensitisation To Foods.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$607,193.00
Summary
With such a dramatic rise in food allergy, and many infants now showing established food-sensitization before starting complimentary foods at 4-6 months, there is a pressing need to define events around much earlier allergen encounter. This project addresses critical questions that form an essential platform for earlier strategies to prevent the rising burden of food allergy and other allergic diseases.
