There is hardly another system, either biological or artificial, that surpasses the visual system in its ability to process extremely complex and dynamic information. The questions concerning developmental aspects of this ability have been one of the most fascinating in both philosophical and scientific inquiry. It also contributes to national research training by offering honours and PhD students research training and international exposure.

In addition to helping us better understand normal social development, this research will provide a foundation for understanding how face-reading difficulties can affect people with developmental disorders (such as autism), how face-reading can be disrupted in individuals whose early visual experience is affected by cataracts at birth, and how such difficulties might be alleviated through clinical intervention.

    The genetic and diagnostic relationship between motor control and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often have comorbid Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). This project will utilise the expertise of leading researchers in Australia and the Netherlands to investigate the genetic and diagnostic relationship between these two disorders utilising a large sample of twins and their siblings. This project will utilise the expertise of leading researchers in Australia and the Netherlands to investigate the genetic and diagnostic relationship between these two disorders utilising a large sample of twins and their siblings. We will examine the neuropsychological functioning in these groups of children in order to gain a better understanding of their genetic relationship. These findings will provide insight into the current DSM-IV classification of these disorders compared with other models used to investigate the relationship between poor motor coordination and ADHD.

    Developing and testing a mnemonic theory of odour perception. This project studies how odours are perceived and remembered. Its theoretical framework is a model of olfaction containing a central assumption that past experience of an odour determines how it is perceived and how well it can be discriminated from other odours. Thus, the project tests predictions that discrimination between odours depends on age and on culture-specific experience, as well as other aspects of the model, like discre .... The project's outcome will be its integration of odour perception, learning and memory, into the first comprehensive information-processing model of human olfaction.

However, driving cessation is associated with depression and reduced social participation among older adults. The present study will benefit older road users and the wider community by identifying which traffic hazards pose the greatest difficulty for older drivers and providing information that may lead to adaptation of roads, and vehicles to reduce crash risk among older Australians. This will reduce injury and healthcare costs and allow older Australians to maintain higher levels of social participation.

There are potential widespread community benefits from knowing whether consuming fish oils will improve cognitive function.
