International Trade Policy and the Dynamics of Open Economies. The project is concerned with the relationship between an open economy's international trading conditions and the allocation of resources within the economy, particularly over time (dynamic effects). The trading conditions reflect international markets and governments' trade policies. The dynamic effects upon the economy include the rate of growth, saving and inter-generation welfare. The models developed to study these relationships will link international markets with domestic and future markets in a unified and consistent manner. The outcomes include a better theoretical understanding of these relationships and empirical inter-temporal models for the Australian economy that permit measurement of these dynamic effects.Read moreRead less
Putting death in its place. The project aims to link 890,000 population records to place of residence from 1838 to 1930, to examine the relationships between where people live, mortality, life expectancy and health. Where people live impacts their life-course outcomes. Using novel matching techniques, the project expects to identify intergenerational changes and the spatial dynamics of inequality and social mobility. Expected outcomes include the creation of a public resource of linked data and ....Putting death in its place. Expected outcomes include the creation of a public resource of linked data and a better understanding of long-run health and inequality. These should provide economic and social benefits by informing policy aimed at contemporary social and health challenges, enhancing our understanding of Australian history, and developing public resources.Read moreRead less
Innovative financing mechanisms for higher education. Advances in statistical modelling are used to highlight the potential to apply creatively income contingent loans for the expansion of Australian and international higher education. Alternative student loan mechanisms for income support and tuition are critically analysed, and new arrangements are proposed for equitable reforms in higher education.
Work life after a diagnosis of breast, prostate and colorectal cancer: Major disruption or work as usual. Each year, over 40,000 working-age individuals (as well as their families and workplaces) are affected by a diagnosis of cancer. This novel and important study will, for the first time in Australia, identify the extent and effects of loss of skilled workers from the workforce because of a diagnosis of breast, prostate or colorectal cancer and will lead to the development of new interventions ....Work life after a diagnosis of breast, prostate and colorectal cancer: Major disruption or work as usual. Each year, over 40,000 working-age individuals (as well as their families and workplaces) are affected by a diagnosis of cancer. This novel and important study will, for the first time in Australia, identify the extent and effects of loss of skilled workers from the workforce because of a diagnosis of breast, prostate or colorectal cancer and will lead to the development of new interventions that help people to recover from cancer. This project is critical to help advance health and labour policies in Australia which currently faces an ageing population, global economic unrest and rising unemployment.Read moreRead less

The effects of parental education on child health outcomes. This project aims to understand how public education policies can improve health. Common economic analysis of returns to education fails to capture the critical secondary beneficial effects of parental education on future generations’ health. These positive effects are systematically undercounted in the cost-benefit analysis of Australia’s investment in education. This project aims to understand how public education policies can improve health. Common economic analysis of returns to education fails to capture the critical secondary beneficial effects of parental education on future generations’ health. These positive effects are systematically undercounted in the cost-benefit analysis of Australia’s investment in education. This project will use Australian datasets and natural experiments to identify how parental education affects the health outcomes of the second generation. This project expects to provide policy recommendations to maximise health, wellbeing and economic outcomes for Australia.Read moreRead less
Applying behavioural insights to the tax system in Australia. Applying behavioural insights to the tax system in Australia. This project aims to improve compliance and payment in the Australian tax system. This project aims to improve compliance and payment in the Australian tax system. It aims to tackle debts of individuals and businesses, the most challenging aspect of tax systems, by applying behavioural insights to design innovative payment interventions and conducting rigorous randomised controlled trials to evaluate their effects. An empirical analysis will account for heterogeneity in treatment responses, and the findings will be combined with a study of regulatory and administrative processes to support the ultimate goal of a legitimate, fair, cost-effective and responsive tax system.Read moreRead less

The research program will enable Australia to sustainably use key marine resources by modelling and developing management strategies for tuna and billfish of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The interdisciplinary research program will (1) develop a set of hypotheses about the critical variables and positive and negative feedbacks of highly migratory fish stocks, (2) model the ecological and economic systems of tuna and billfish in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and (3), link the models to a framework to adaptively manage the resources in a multilateral context while ensuring their long-term sustainability.Read moreRead less
Emissions trading and the design and operation of Australia's energy markets. Past research has applied the methods of experimental economics to focus on capacity markets, futures markets, and demand side response management options for electricity markets in the United States of America. This project will examine research priorities for Australia's energy markets. These include market impacts on investment decision-making, trade in Renewable Energy Certificates, and the consequences of carbon emissions trading for energy market outcomes. Australia's electricity markets are primarily financial markets and new policy developments present both risks and opportunities. By designing and testing markets, experiments will be used to test market performance and for unforeseen consequences of new market policies.Read moreRead less
Identifying technological trajectories using machine learning algorithms. This project aims to improve our understanding of why scientific knowledge progresses in certain directions and what causes it to grow faster or slower across fields. The project will create new neural-network machine-learning algorithms to scan patent and scientific article texts (specifications and claims) for natural language concepts. The results will potentially be used by patent offices to improve their own database ....Identifying technological trajectories using machine learning algorithms. This project aims to improve our understanding of why scientific knowledge progresses in certain directions and what causes it to grow faster or slower across fields. The project will create new neural-network machine-learning algorithms to scan patent and scientific article texts (specifications and claims) for natural language concepts. The results will potentially be used by patent offices to improve their own database search, by business analytics companies to reveal new technologies and potential collaborators, and by academic economists to understand how knowledge travels and accumulates.

The project will investigate public expectations and values about the health system. The results will: (i) challenge the recent WHO evaluation of health systems in which 75 percent of the total score came from objectives other than population health; (ii) provide policy makers with numerical scores to indicate the relative importance of different broad objectives (such as access and the distribution of health services and the question of access to services); (iii) provide health service researchers with numerical scores to indicate where there are higher priority services or recipients: for example, the young or those with long term disabilities.Read moreRead less
