Summary
Exposure to diesel exhaust increases the risk of lung cancer. One in five Australians is exposed to diesel exhaust in the workplace. This project will provide an exposure-response relation between diesel exhaust and lung cancer based on Australia-specific data. We will also estimate the number of lung cancer cases due to diesel exhaust exposure in Australia. We will do this by studying all miners in WA in the last 15 years, by linking several databases that are available in WA.
Air Pollution And Mortality And Morbidity In Adult Australians (APMMA Study): A Large Population Based Cohort Study

Summary
This study will investigate the link between respiratory and cardiovascular disease and mortality and exposure to long-term air pollution. We will use cutting edge methods to assign neighbourhood air pollution levels to a large cohort of NSW adults (n>265,000) previously recruited in the 45 and Up Study. The study results will be of utmost importance in setting outdoor air pollution standards and informing cost benefit analyses of air pollution control strategies.
Thousands of chemicals are used in Australian workplaces. For many of these chemicals it is not known if they are harmful to people who work with them. Unless we can measure how much of a chemical a worker has been exposed to, we cannot determine if the chemical is harmful. While we can test what chemicals a worker is currently exposed to, it is more difficult to estimate how much chemical exposure they have had in the past. New computer technology will be used to develop an intelligent evolving database that can be used when asking people about jobs they have had in the past. Summary
Preterm babies are often slower to reach developmental milestones than term babies. Extremely preterm babies spend a long time developing in the neonatal unit, which is suboptimal to the womb. Evidence suggests that open neonatal units are bright and loud and single rooms may be better for neonatal development. However, a recent study found poorer neurodevelopment with single rooms. This study aims to improve outcomes in single rooms through the application of a sound and language intervention.
Occupational And Environmental Exposures Associated With Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis In Australia

Summary
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive scarring lung disease of unknown cause with little effective treatment from which most patients die within 2-3 years. Although relatively rare, the public health impact is similar to many cancers. We will undertake a nationwide case-control study to identify jobs and exposures associated with the development of IPF. The results will influence policy to control exposures and over time reduce the occurrence of this devastating lung disease.
Mobile Phones, Radiofrequency Exposure And The Development Of Cognitive Function In Primary School Children

Summary
Increasingly widespread exposure to radiofrequency fields from mobile telephones has raised concern about potential adverse health effects. The WHO has called for further research in children. We will conduct a 3 year study of 600 primary school students focussing on their exposure to mobile phones and cognitive development. If there are no significant effects, the community can be reassured. However if effects are demonstrated, we would need to restrict the use of mobile phones by children.
It is self-evident that people should be able to go to work and know that their work is not giving them cancer. Despite modern health and safety laws, about 5000 Australians a year contract cancer related to their previous work exposures. My research provides evidence to link chemical and other exposures at work with later cancer development. I also develop new methods to accurately assess past exposure to chemicals. The aim of my research is to make the workplace safer.

Infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality. I will undertake research in a number of areas, with a focuses on: i)Imported infections: My lead role in and access to a global network of sites that track infections among travellers and immigrants will enable study of emerging priority issues among mobile populations. ii)Waterborne risks: I will perform studies to identify optimal strategies for improving water supply and associated health impacts in developing countries.
