Summary
The PREVIEW Study will identify the most efficient lifestyle pattern for the prevention of type-2 diabetes in a population of pre-diabetic overweight or obese individuals. The project comprises two distinct lines of evidence, an intervention study and population studies. Can Exercise Early After Spinal Cord Injury Prevent Deterioration Of Muscle And Bone?

Summary
Spinal cord injury leads to a profound deterioration of the muscles and bones in the paralysed limbs. This project will examine the effects of exercising the paralysed limbs as early as possible after injury to prevent muscle and bone loss rather than restoring the tissues once changes have occurred. The time course and mechanisms underlying the microstructural decay of bone over the first year after injury will also be examined to provide a basis for determining fracture risk in this group.
Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy with significant consequences. Early identification and lifestyle intervention can prevent GDM, but the best early screening test is unknown. Our primary aim is to validate our first trimester screening test for GDM in a large multi-ethnic cohort to accurately predict high-risk women and intervene early, preventing GDM onset and improving pregnancy outcomes, including long-term risk of obesity in the offspring.

Summary
This research aims to define trends in the prevalence of, and complications associated with, metabolic syndrome in adults with type 1 diabetes, using the Australian National Diabetes Information Audit and Benchmarking Initiative (ANDIAB). Subsequently, a randomised controlled trial will examine the effect of exercise on glycaemic control and diabetes complications risk profiles in this group. These studies will thus address disease profiles and a potential beneficial clinical intervention.
High Protein, Low Glycemic Load Weight Loss Diets In Type 2 Diabetes

Summary
High protein, low glycemic load weight loss diets have the potential to be of value in long term weight control but there is little long term data available. There is also some uncertainty about the long term safety of high protein diets and this needs clarification in long term trials. As compliance to the diet is the major issue in long term trials we will explore new ways of getting people to stay in long term studies and maintain a calorie reduced diet.
Obesity and insulin resistance are an escalating health problem in Australian adolescents. Unmanaged, they are likely to progress to type 2 diabetes and early atherosclerosis and which may pose a major burden on health care resources. However, treatment strategies are currently limited because of the lack of evidence.
