The expanding disciplinary scope of research ethics committees: an inquiry into need and resistance. Do ethics committees have a bias toward quantitative and clinical research methods? Using a mixed methods approach, this project will systematically study whether ethics committees fail to understand and evaluate qualitative research methods; and whether some disciplines are more resistant to ethics review than others.
Reinventing Philosophy as a Way of Life. The core aim of this project is to examine modern re-inventions of the classical ideal of philosophy as a way of life. It will investigate the reanimation of this idea in post-Kantian philosophy, including well-known figures such as Nietzsche but also neglected figures such as Jean-Marie Guyau. Summary
Nature and culture in German Romantic philosophy and environmental philosophy. In light of the recent scholarship on the philosophical significance of German romanticism, this project will provide the first study that focuses on the relation between nature and culture in German romantic philosophy. It will also initiate a dialogue on the potential of German romantic ideas to address concerns within environmental philosophy.
Hume's Sceptical Materialism. The early modern period is the decisive period in shaping the modern outlook, but its major figures are not well understood in Australia. This project will enable a broader and more unified understanding of the intellectual movements of the period (showing Hume to be not an intellectual outsider but someone offering a sceptical version of the radical Enlightenment) - and so will enable a better understanding of our intellectual heritage.
Representing Nature: Romantic Empiricism and Environmental Philosophy. This project aims to investigate a distinctive tradition of empiricism that emerged in Germany during the Romantic period; illustrate important parallels between this tradition and contemporary environmental philosophy; and articulate the ways in which the methodological innovations of Romantic empiricism can address the key challenges facing current environmental thought. The republic of the demiurge: textual community and the commentary tradition in late antique Platonism. This project will add to our understanding of the content and purpose of philosophy within 'higher education' in the eastern Roman Empire in the period 300-500 CE. Since there are many ways in which the late Empire resembles our own time, this understanding illuminates the place of philosophy in what we call higher education.

Functional neuroimaging provides a tremendous amount of information about the brain, but what it shows about the mind is less clear. Addressing this fundamental philosophical question requires developing a detailed account of theory-testing in cognitive neuroscience.
