The major benefit of this research is that it assesses the extent to which Australia's epoch-making switch to International Financial Reporting Standards in 2005 has been successful in practice relative to similar developments in the EU and elsewhere. Further, the research measures the actual quantitative impact of the change in accounting standards to assess whether or not the change has been significant from the standpoint of making international comparisons of Australian corporate performance. Thus important evidence is provided about the outcomes of Australia's global convergence initiative, how we compare with our major trading partners, and the key change factors involved.Read moreRead less

The existing models of corporate governance in economics and finance based on agency theory do not successfully portray all modern corporations. Thus the importance of a new and rigorous way to study corporate governance can be hardly exaggerated. This project will provide a synthesized theory of corporate governance and is expected to produce highest-quality research publishable in top-tier journals. This will, among others, enhance Australia's standing as a knowledge nation. This project is also expected to contribute to the discussions on how to improve corporate governance and regulation of management compensation both in Australia and abroad. Read moreRead less

This project aims to determine the benefits of career development in enhancing volunteer performance and volunteer retention, with particular attention to the needs of senior volunteers. Research concerning career development is fundamentally important in the paid workforce; little investigation has occurred in the economically important and parallel area of volunteer development. The project will build on preliminary research by the Chief Investigators by developing and testing a research instrument underpinned by career development theory. The anticipated outcomes will be (a) an improved understanding of volunteer needs within an organisation through career matching and development, (b) a generic "tool kit" for organisations wishing to develop and maintain volunteers, particularly their more experienced and senior ones and (c) a benefit to the emotional and physical well-being of the community in general and volunteers in particular.Read moreRead less

This project aims to discover why employers use particular strategies when sourcing skills and whether these strategies benefit their workers.Addressing employer skills needs expediently is imperative for productivity and national prosperity. Employers’ strategies have profound implications for the workforce and the Australian labour market, particularly at a time of rising unemployment. This project will study why employers increasingly ‘buy’ skills externally, through recruitment and sponsored immigration, rather than ‘build’ skills internally through employee development strategies. Understanding how immigration and domestic policy mechanisms addressing employer and labour market needs is expected to inform policy development on this vital issue.Read moreRead less

This network brings together a multi-disciplinary research group to enhance frontier science in managerial/consumer decision making and choice behaviour. Our focus will on using our interaction to develop normative and descriptive theory by operationalising theories and methods from a mixture of disciplines. Individual/group decisions/choices underlie many aggregate societal phenomena like election outcomes, consumer demand, technology adoption, etc. Better understanding of such processes will lead to better models, better forecasts and better decision outcomes for Australia, and smarter use of information and data; something that can only come from a multi-disciplinary interaction of theory and method.Read moreRead less

High profile corporate failures attributable to incorrect hedging strategies have recently drawn attention to corporate financial risk management, although its important role in financial management is far more ubiquitous and pervasive. The project will shed light on the internal processes of corporate risk management which previous studies have not addressed. It will produce a 'stock-take' of current practices enabling assessment against theoretical models and identification of current 'best practice'. Against this backdrop, Australian firms will be able to assess the merits of their current policies and practices, and assist corporate outsiders (regulators, analysts, researchers) in better understanding corporate risk management. This project focuses on market segmentation and planning strategy through the development of under-used geo-referenced data sources. Specifically, the project seeks to combine two key market intelligence software tools (Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Data Mining Systems) with the primary focus being on the Australian automobile industry. Spatial data mining approaches will be used to sift through massive volumes of data, uncover patterns, and generate knowledge through effective database management techniques. This research will open new inter-disciplinary frontiers between marketing and GIS, with the outcomes expected to provide valuable information for decision makers at the academic, industry and governmental levels.Read moreRead less
