Summary
This project investigates the genetic cause of a relatively common defect in male genitalia, hypospadias, in which the penis opening is aberrantly located. Hypospadias affects 1 in ~250 males, usually requires surgery and can cause problems with intercourse and urination. Using new technologies to study patient DNA, we will identify mutations causing hypospadias and new genes involved in development of the male genitalia. This will lead to improved clinical diagnosis and management of patients.

Summary
In Australia 1 in 25 births are conceived from IVF treatment and this is increasing. My research program will use a comprehensive set of linked population data to address key questions in the IVF field following major changes to IVF practice in the last decade. This research (examining fetal growth, birth defects, intellectual disability and school achievement) has the potential to influence clinical practice and will greatly improve the information available for pre-treatment counselling.

Summary
Although smallpox, one of the deadliest human pathogens, was eradicated in 1980, the current global climate has resulted in fears that smallpox may be used as a biological weapon. Unfortunately the smallpox vaccine poses a serious health hazard to certain people. We have shown that Glivec, a drug used to treat cancer, has potent anti-viral affects on poxvirus replication. This project will test the effectiveness of Glivec in treating smallpox in an animal model and study how it acts.

Summary
Metastasis accounts for over 90% of deaths due to cancer worldwide. I aim to uncover the signals, which drive cancer cells to distant sites leading to metastatic tumour growth. Although the efficacy of current therapeutics is improving, they are unable to counteract tumour spread and relapses that are common with many cancers. My research will focus on understanding the events that lead to metastasis thus enabling us to develop better therapies for aggressive cancers.

Utilising my background in Immunology I will investigate whether specific genetic mutations can create a susceptibility for dysregulation of the flora and immune system within the gut, thus predisposing an individual to inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) as well as non-intestinal inflammatory conditions. These diseases are becoming an increasingly prevalent and serious health burden in Australia.
