This project seeks to develop a new class of building materials based on geopolymers. These materials will have superior corrosion resistance, fire resistance, heat and noise insulating properties. The project will study in detail the effect of processing parameters on microstructure of these materials, and effect of structure and composition on properties. A good understanding of this would result in environmentally friendly inexpensive inorganic materials with superior durability, chemical and fire resistance, heat and noise insulation properties that can substitute organic polymers and ordinary Portland cement concrete in special applications.Read moreRead less
Development of polycrystalline silicon thin-film photovoltaic devices on glass. This project addresses a range of key issues relevant to crystalline silicon solar cells bound by the common feature of reducing the cost of solar photovoltaic electricity by fabricating thin films of good-quality polycrystalline silicon on cheap glass substrates. The project is significant because thin-film polycrystalline silicon solar cells on glass can dramatically lower the cost of solar electricity. However, at present such cells are not yet produced industrially. This project is expected to lead to major scientific/technical advances with this hugely promising power generation technology, and to bring forward the industrial mass production of these urgently needed devices.Read moreRead less

The project falls within Research Priority 3: Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries. This generic work involves cutting-edge multidisciplinary research leading to better understanding of the fundamental principles governing the behaviour of hybrid materials. The proposed framework of internally engineered architecture will enrich the existing set of available methods of designing new materials, extend the knowledge base of the discipline and maintain Australia's leading position in the field. Australian Industry will benefit directly from unique engineering properties and functionalities that hybrids provide. This contributes to Priority Goals: Breakthrough Science and Advanced Materials.Read moreRead less
Fracture propagation through fragmented solids. This project investigates fracture propagation in heavily fractured (fragmented) solids such as rock masses, ice covers, fractured coatings, mortar-free structures. It introduces new ideas and methods and has potential to result in a breakthrough science to achieve better understanding of the fundamental processes of fracturing fragmented materials that will advance knowledge and develop technological innovations. A particular outcome of the project will be in developing tools for designing new materials with enhanced failure resistance. Another application is in Resource Engineering and Earth and Planetary Science; the project will contribute to understanding of fracture propagation in the Earth's (and generally, planetary) crust.Read moreRead less

Advanced silicon photovoltaic, photonic, optoelectronic and micro-electromechanical devices require state of the art processing equipment for the deposition of thin dielectric films and for controlled doping of the devices. Key techniques include the deposition of stoichiometric and silicon rich silicon nitride and silicon dioxide films, and the controlled wafer doping with boron and phosphorus. A state of the art furnace stack is to be procured which will satisfy these requirements on industrially relevant wafer sizes up to 150mm. The equipment will support a broad range of research projects in the above fields, ranging from fundamental investigations to applied research carried out in collaboration with industry partners.Read moreRead less

Security, defence, agriculture, medicine are a few of the fields where THz science and technology are booming. THz developments offer enhanced national security, prosperity and quality of life. Australia has active researchers in THz concentrated at several centres across the country, but they are hampered by their work by lack of access to state-of-the art experimental equipment. This project will provide that equipment and ensure the nation remains internationally competitive in this rapidly-developing field.Read moreRead less
INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANISM CAUSING SHRINKAGE STRAINS IN CONCRETES MADE WITH SLAG BLENDED CEMENTS. Slag, an industrial by-product, can partially substitute portland cement. Slag, an industrial by-product, can partially substitute portland cement. High slag contents produce highly durable concretes and help reduce the CO2 emissions due to cement manufacture. Major problem of high slag content is often the high shrinkages resulting in the concrete. This project will systematically study all the factors affect the shrinkage behaviour in slag-blended cement concretes including the appropriateness of the standard shrinkage measurement method. The other aim is to develop a micro-mechanical model to understand the fundamental mechanism involved. This model will also lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in shrinkage in all concretes.Read moreRead less

The creation of new and advanced materials and composites will underpin the growth in many industrial and economic activities in Australia. This project will meet the substantial scientific and technological challenges in exploring and finding optimal microstructures for materials and composites with desired functional properties. The proposed research will significantly extend a topological optimization technique known as ESO/BESO - an Australian initiative that has earned a widespread international recognition. Its further development and applications will enable the Australian researchers and engineers to maintain and enhance the national capacity to exploit a niche market in the design of novel materials and composites.Read moreRead less
