This means that it is now possible to generate a variety of human cell types in the laboratory, to study how they work, and to find out what goes wrong in different diseases. Summary
Inherited skeletal dystrophies and myopathies are devastating and debilitating disease for which there are no cures and general muscle wasting is major health problem for a significant number of older Australians. Understanding how muscles form, grow and are maintained in model system, the Zebrafish, will provide avenues for treatment of these diseases. We will create models of human muscle diseases in zebrafish and test the usefulness of different therapeutic approaches we develop.
Dengue is a serious viral disease that is spread by mosquitoes. Dengue results in hundreds of thousands of children and young adults being hospitalized in Asia every year, and some patients die. There is no vaccine or specific treatment. In this fellowship I will lead a research program that aims provide doctors with the tools to diagnosis and treat dengue more efficiently and to develop a novel biological control to prevent dengue being transmitted by mosquitoes.

Kidney function throughout life depends upon what happened during your foetal development as all the functional units of the kidney are made prior to birth. In this project, we will use our understanding of normal kidney development to develop new regenerative approaches to the treatment of this condition.
