From Sigmund Freud to Jacques Lacan, disputes in psychoanalysis have typically hinged on the question of whether the knowledge produced by psychoanalysis deserves the appellation scientific. If so, in what way? If not, why not? What sort of psychoanalytic institution would be adequate to psychoanalysis? scientific claims? This interdisciplinary project is a historical, critical and constructive examination of psychoanalytic theory and practice, which re-examines key texts from the vantage point of the scientific question. This project aims to undertake a detailed examination of how the arts and sciences can work together to address the complex challenges of contemporary life. This will be addressed by undertaking the first cultural history of the experiment. Experimentation is common to the arts and sciences, and thinking about the long history of experimental practices in both fields will help build a bridge between them. This project will examine in detail past and present collaboration. An expected outcome is the development of models to support solving of complex contemporary problems. It will also raise awareness about the importance of the arts to knowledge-making practices.

Re-imaging the empirical: Statistical visualisation in art and science. This project aims to investigate how statistical images re-shape diverse knowledge domains and practices from facial recognition to medical diagnosis to video-tagging, and how arts-led visualisation changes statistical image conventions and techniques. Re-imaging the empirical: Statistical visualisation in art and science. This project aims to investigate how statistical images re-shape diverse knowledge domains and practices from facial recognition to medical diagnosis to video-tagging, and how arts-led visualisation changes statistical image conventions and techniques. The overlap of popular, scientific and aesthetic dimensions of visual culture with data analytical techniques is creating a new kind of statistical visual culture. However, there is scant literacy or understanding of statistical visualisation's role in empirical domains today. This project aims to improve visual literacies and dialogue across communities of practice in art and science, and to communicate the value and role of statistics today.
