Safe and unsafe workplace behaviour: the impact of organisational culture and climate. This APA(I) project involves a study of safety cultures of organizations and safety climates of workgroups. It will develop and trial safety interventions derived from an understanding of the normative and individual psychological contracts of safety. It is hypothesized that such contracts will impact on safety behaviors and injury rate. It will develop and trial safety interventions derived from an understanding of the normative and individual psychological contracts of safety. It is hypothesized that such contracts will impact on safety behaviors and injury rate. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Kmart and KAAL (Alcoa) who experience very different levels of risk. The ultimate aim is to develop a better understanding of the complex human systems which impact on safety behaviors and injury rates in organizations.Read moreRead less
Evidence-based improvement of statistical inference practices in psychology and other disciplines. The commonest ways that many researchers currently draw conclusions from their data have been shown to be inefficient, and often used incorrectly. This project will develop new, better statistical representations and software tools for data analysis. It will evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of these. Wide adoption of these techniques and tools will enhance the international reputation and competitiveness of Australian psychological science. Adoption by Australian researchers across the social and behavioural sciences, and in other disciplines including medicine, economics and ecology, will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Australian research, with consequential wide-ranging benefits to the Australian community.Read moreRead less

Increasing pay differences between CEOs and the average working Australian have resulted in a less equitable and economically divided society. This issue has reached a critical point as taxpayer money is now needed to fund stimulus packages and finance companies facing insolvency while CEO pay on average has remained unchanged or increased. This inequity has the potential to cause social and political instability. This research will provide much needed knowledge of how to address this issue including pay benchmarks, knowledge derived from international practice, corporate governance indices as well as understanding of how widespread pay norms have developed.Read moreRead less

The Australian naturalistic driving study: innovation in road safety research and policy. A revolutionary new approach, the naturalistic driving study, will investigate what people actually do when they drive, in normal and safety-critical situations. It will provide Australia with answers to some intractable, high priority, road safety problems that cannot be answered using current methods, thereby saving hundreds of lives.

Summary
Integrated facility for recording driver and road user behaviour. The integrated facility will be used to record and analyse data on driver and road user behaviour, in normal and safety-critical situations, for thousands of Australian drivers. The data yielded will be used to develop new and improved countermeasures for reducing road deaths and serious injuries on Australian roads.

Emotion dynamics and well-being. This project aims to advance the science of emotion by resolving a fundamental paradox regarding the relationship between emotion dynamics and well-being. This project aims to advance the science of emotion by resolving a fundamental paradox regarding the relationship between emotion dynamics and well-being. Emotion dynamics are reliably associated with psychological well-being. However, emotional flexibility and stability have been identified as important for healthy functioning. This project aims to resolve this paradox by applying cutting-edge statistical techniques to model emotion dynamics in daily life, as captured using smartphones. The project will develop a comprehensive theory of the relationship between emotion dynamics and well-being. This project will contribute to fulfilling the potential of mobile assessment methods for tracking and improving mental health and well-being.Read moreRead less

Australian researchers will participate in high quality theory driven longitudinal research of crucial practical importance nationally and of theoretical importance internationally. Specifically the study will assist in understanding workplace health and productivity in terms of job conditions, demands and resources. It will underscore costly consequences of stressful jobs e.g. depression related workplace productivity loss in dollar terms. Australian governments, unions, and OHS organisations will have access to high quality evidence to: design and evaluate OHS interventions; inform prevention campaigns, policies and practice; benchmark progress at national levels; monitor changing trends; and develop national standards.Read moreRead less
The psychological effects of wasting in Australian jockeys. It is well known that many jockeys engage in short-term, unhealthy cycles of weight loss and gain, known as 'wasting', to maintain consistent low riding-weight. The use of saunas is specially popular, with other known practices including food avoidance, laxative abuse, ingestion of diuretics and appetite suppressants, excessive exercise and self-induced vomiting. The adverse physiological effects of 'wasting' are well documented. This i ....The psychological effects of wasting in Australian jockeys. The use of saunas is specially popular, with other known practices including food avoidance, laxative abuse, ingestion of diuretics and appetite suppressants, excessive exercise and self-induced vomiting. The adverse physiological effects of 'wasting' are well documented. This investigation seeks to explore and describe the ways in which these pathogenic forms of weight control used the jockeys effect their psychological health. The primary outcome focus of the research is the formulation of recommendations for the adoption of healthy weight management practices by Australian jockeys that promote psychological well-being.Read moreRead less

There is considerable interest in understanding principles governing effective management and sharing of knowledge in organisations. Members of organisations acquire much knowledge from external sources, other staff, practice, and experience, which, if shared efficiently, makes a significant difference to performance. This project focuses on the team, the basic unit in modern organisations. Four studies are proposed to examine antecedents of knowledge sharing, the relationship between amount and type of knowledge shared and team performance, identification of different knowledge-sharing roles taken by team members, and the effect of several highly active knowledge sharers on team performance. The findings will add to the literature on communication and information exchange in organisations, and will point to strategies for implementing effective knowledge sharing practices.
