Summary
Neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) are uncommon cancers. Low-grade tumours may grow very slowly and not require treatment, but high-grade tumours can grow over weeks and have a poor prognosis. Grade is determined by looking at tissue, but this may vary considerably even in different disease sites in the same patient. Two PET scans (FDG PET and 68Gallium PET) can show high grade and low grade disease respectively, and we plan to investigate their combination in imaging advanced neuroendocrine tumours.

Summary
Heart failure (an inability of the heart to meet the bodyÍs metabolic requirements) is a major public health burden with high rates of death, hospitalisation, and reduced quality of life. Further research is required to investigate the underlying mechanisms. This project will analyse abnormalities in heart structure and function using new techniques in heart ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, and blood tests. Summary
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy with significant maternal and fetal consequences. The benefits of screening and treatment for GDM after 24 weeks’ gestation are well known, however there is little evidence for early screening and intervention for women with high risk for GDM. The primary aim of this study is to determine whether early diagnosis and intervention improves pregnancy outcomes in GDM, specifically fetal overgrowth.

The use of a minimally invasive blood test to measure the circulating levels of melanoma-specific miRNAs may provide a rapid assessment for clinical management of the disease during dissemination of the tumour. This work has the potential to provide new prognostic markers for melanoma as well as to identify new gene targets for the design of rational therapies to treat this disease.

Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern, with one in four children aged 5 -14 years affected. Those from single parent and lower income families are at particular risk. Infancy and the preschool years are an ideal time for obesity prevention, before children have formed their lifelong eating habits. This project aims to design a program (informed by prior research) that is targeted toward those families most at risk, and that is community-based, practical and cost-effective.
