Summary
Retinoblastoma (RB) is a rare, blinding and sometimes fatal, childhood eye cancer. The earliest diagnosis affords the child the best prognosis for retaining their sight, eye or their life. This project will examine parents’ current understanding of the symptoms and signs for RB, identify barriers to early diagnosis of RB, and to develop, implement and evaluate a sustainable public health awareness program to potentially improve the timing of diagnosis and subsequent outcomes for this disease.
Inflammatory skin disorders, such as psoriasis and dermatitis, are responsible for a large burden of human disease and affect people across alldemographics. Knockout (KO) of TNF signalling members in mice is known to induce skin inflammation. This project proposes to use these genetic mouse models to investigate how and why disruption of particular TNF superfamily members leads to disease and potentially identify new targets for treatment.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is present in 12% of Australians aged over 25. CKD is associated with poor health outcomes including cardiovascular disease and progression to End Stage Kidney Disease. Many questions about CKD remain. My research aims to increase our understanding of the natural history of CKD in the Australian population, with focus on outcomes of CKD progression, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, quality of life, and costs to society.

Heart disease and stroke is the leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and accounts for over one quarter in the life expectancy gap. A recent survey found that 59% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women live with heart disease or stroke. This PhD seeks to understand the risks of, and hospitalisation and mortality from heart disease and stroke in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. The project is guided by a women’s Advisory Group.

Cardiovascular disease kills one Australian every 12 minutes. Coordinated and prompt medical treatment of heart attack is essential in preventing mortality. This study will identify contributing factors of delay from a frontline clinician and hospital perspective. It is anticipated by understanding the impact these factors have on the delivery of heart attack care, an evidence base is built to support the various clinicians involved, and improve this complex process of care across Victoria.

Lewy body dementias (LBD) comprise similar but heterogenous group of poorly understood disabling neurodegenerative conditions. This project aims to apply advanced neuroimaging techniques and novel psychological testing to patients at risk of Lewy body disorders as well individuals with established disease to identify novel biomarkers that may explain symptoms of these disorders as well as help predict development of LBD at its early stages when it may be amenable to neuroprotective treatments.

The burden of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in pregnancy can be significant and in Australia is mostly confined to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. This study explores the barriers to timely diagnosis and best practice care for pregnant women with RHD, through 1) a study of reporting and health information systems related to RHD in pregnancy; and 2) an examination of health professionals’ knowledge, experiences of and attitudes to provision of care for pregnant women with RHD.
