    Devices that use Ion Channels. The proposed device would supply the community of researchers in Australia and internationally with new techniques to enable them to quickly and conveniently investigate properties of ion channels and to speed the screening of potential ion channel targets for pharmaceutical hits and leads.     Optimisation of cell culture and molecular typing for the characterisation of Cryptosporidium in water. Cryptosporidium is an important waterborne agent of diarrhoeal disease in people and animals. Improved methods for accurately detecting viable parasite stages recovered from water are a priority research need for the water industry. They are dependent upon improved in vitro cultivation procedures that can be combined with DNA-based assays for identifying species and strains of Cryptosporidi .... Optimisation of cell culture and molecular typing for the characterisation of Cryptosporidium in water. Cryptosporidium is an important waterborne agent of diarrhoeal disease in people and animals. Improved methods for accurately detecting viable parasite stages recovered from water are a priority research need for the water industry. They are dependent upon improved in vitro cultivation procedures that can be combined with DNA-based assays for identifying species and strains of Cryptosporidium and closely related protozoa recovered from freshwater. This project addresses these needs in a collaborative study between scientists at Murdoch University with expertise in both in vitro cultivation and genetic characterisation of Cryptosporidium, and scientists from two of the major water utilities in Australia.

    An ultra-wideband digital filterbank for the Mopra Radiotelescope. We seek funding to equip the Mopra radiotelescope with an ultra-wide-bandwidth digital filter bank. This will greatly improve the efficiency of the observatory, increasing the speed at which spectroscopic data is acquired by a factor of 8, and the speed of acquiring continuum data by a factor of 32. Once equipped in this way, Mopra, which is already the largest millimetre-wave radiotelescope in the southern hemisphere, will enjo .... The experiment will yield a massive leap forward in our understanding of our Milky Way Galaxy. Australia 'punches above its weight' in astronomy because .... Australia 'punches above its weight' in astronomy because of our innovation, ability to maximise limited resources and to cannily target projects with high return for the investment applied. The same rationale here is delivering excellent science. To secure this return into the second, most productive phase requires modest additional investment by Australia and our partners in the necessary project infrastructure.
