The use of quantum mechanical systems to carry and process information is enabling a revolution in information technology through innovations such as quantum computation and quantum teleportation. This project investigates the fundamental theory of quantum information science. The project aims to formulate general principles governing the power and behaviour of quantum information. These principles will, in turn, enable the development of powerful new applications of quantum information. Principal areas to be addressed include: general conditions for a physical system to be usable for quantum computation, the development of new algorithms for quantum computers, the development of new quantum communication protocols, and the theory of quantum entanglement.Read moreRead less

Nanoparticles can have unique and interesting properties such as optical activity and redox (electronic) behaviour that can be utilised in a number of applications such as drug delivery and cancer hyperthermia treatments, coatings, electronic devices and sensors. The main aims of this research program are to produce novel nanoparticles using an innovative method which uses biological species such as fungi and plant extracts, and to study the growth mechanisms, structure and properties of these nanoparticles. These studies could lead to the discovery of novel nanoparticles with applications in the fields mentioned above. This project also aims to train/educate young Australian graduates in the growing area of advanced materials.Read moreRead less
Novel methods for detecting changes in soft tissue microstructure and biomechanical properties using multi-modality MR imaging. This project will lead to novel methods for studying the internal structure of the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles and brain tissue, and how this is affected by mechanical loading and disease states. The project will thoroughly validate these new methods. This will not only provide new techniques for research use, but lead to improved diagnostic techniques in ....Novel methods for detecting changes in soft tissue microstructure and biomechanical properties using multi-modality MR imaging. Australia is strongly investing in nanotechnology and through the governments priority goals 'Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries' it has been recognised as an important area for investment. This proposal will help develop an internationally recognised nano-industry. It is envisaged that the particles made during this work will have direct implications for the public - creating a new class of medical diagnostic particles with better resolution and specificity. These particles have the potential to diagnose patients more precisely and at an earlier stage than is currently available. Additionally, these particles could be designed to load drugs and hence could be used to treat diseases such as cancer.Read moreRead less

Imagine a laser beam, but not with just one colour, but containing all colours. The light beam thus looks white, somewhat like a search light, except that it is much brighter. We now know how to generate such bright white beams of light, but it is expensive, requiring a small specialized laboratory full of equipment. Through a better understanding, we will make it easier and cheaper to generate these light beams. All kinds of applications that have been known for years, such as medical imaging and chemical analysis, then suddenly become practical. We anticipate that in the future these bright white light beams will be used on a routine basis in Australian hospitals and industry. Read moreRead less
