Mineralocorticoid exists normally in the human body to maintain fluid and salt balance. However, it is also implicated in diseases affecting the heart and the kidneys. My research aims to further our understanding on how mineralocorticoids contribute to kidney disease, and in particular, to investigate the role of specific kidney cells on mediating kidney injury. Summary
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults, affecting 30% of Australians with diabetes. Patients at most risk of blindness are the focus of this project. We aim to (1) investigate why some people are more likely to develop blinding DR by looking at genetic difference between diabetic patients with and without DR; and, (2) help to understand why Indigenous Australians are so over represented in this subset of diabetic patients going blind from DR.

My research focuses on optimizing treatment for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macula oedema; which contribute significantly to rates of vision loss worldwide. I am investigating whether genetics play a role in the development of this disease so we can develop a personalized approach to treatment. I am exploring whether there are risk factors for poorer response to current treatment. I am also investigating whether a new drug (Ozurdex) is a better alternative in remote communities.

This research aims to define trends in the prevalence of, and complications associated with, metabolic syndrome in adults with type 1 diabetes, using the Australian National Diabetes Information Audit and Benchmarking Initiative (ANDIAB). Subsequently, a randomised controlled trial will examine the effect of exercise on glycaemic control and diabetes complications risk profiles in this group. These studies will thus address disease profiles and a potential beneficial clinical intervention.

Summary
Fenofibrate has been shown to reduce the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type 2 diabetes by up to 40%, however the mechanisms behind this result are poorly understood. This research will investigate measures of local and systemic endothelial dysfunction and levels of lipids and lipoproteins to determine how fenofibrate affects the progression of DR in patients with type 2 diabetes and in doing so form the basis of further basic and clinical research.
