Evaluating Recently Introduced Prevention Strategies And Investigating Further Aetiologies Of Cerebral Palsy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $314,644.00
    Summary
Cerebral palsy is an early brain injury that affects movement. Every year in Australia, this life long condition will be identified in another 600 infants. This Early Career Fellowship will train an Australian researcher to evaluate promising prevention strategies that could reduce the overall incidence of cerebral palsy for the first time. The researcher will also investigate other causes of cerebral palsy including birth defects that occur very early in pregnancy.

Generational And Developmental Pathways Of Childhood And Adolescent Obesity: A Three Generation Cohort Study

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,281,100.00
    Summary
There are no community-based follow-up (FU) studies of three generations able to examine the impact of earlier generational factors on the developmental pathways of obesity in third generation. The Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP) cohort now has data covering the grandmothers' (GI) reproductive life course and a FU of their children (GII) into adulthood. We now propose a new study of the "children-of-the-children" who are the grandchildren (GIII) of GI and children of GII

Investigating The Relationships Between Cannabis And Other Drug Use, Mental Health, Early-life Factors And Life-course Outcomes: Integrative Analyses Of Data From Four Australasian Cohort Studies

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $292,097.00
    Summary
The current study will be the first of its kind to use integrative data analyses _ a highly innovative approach _ to pool data from four large and long-running Australasian cohort studies to better understand the link between cannabis use and later-life outcomes. Dramatically improved knowledge of these relationships will create a clearer picture of the interventions required to reduce the harms associated with cannabis use.

Targeting early contact with the criminal justice system in young people. This project aims to identify who and why young people first come in contact with the criminal justice system and what determines the early course of contact. The project will focus on first police contact, as a victim, witness or offender, as a means of identifying young people at-risk of adverse life outcomes. This project aims to identify who and why young people first come in contact with the criminal justice system and what determines the early course of contact. The project will focus on first police contact, as a victim, witness or offender, as a means of identifying young people at-risk of adverse life outcomes. It intends to build on the NSW Child Development Study, a large population-based intergenerational cohort, to develop services and interventions aimed at preventing young people from becoming enmeshed in the criminal justice system.

    Funding Amount
    $429,099.00
    Summary
The NSW child development study. Research shows that a child's development predicts health and social outcomes later in life. This Australian project will be the first to identify risk and protective factors associated with these outcomes in 87,000 children from birth to 10 years. The results will help inform governments to improve our children's health and educational achievements.

Normative study of a checklist of emotional and behavioural disturbance in adults with intellectual disability. People with intellectual disability (ID) are three times more likely to suffer mental illness than the general community, making this a bigger problem than schizophrenia. They are a great burden to their carers and cost to the community but their mental health problems remain largely untreated. This study aims to conduct the largest and most comprehensive survey of the mental health of adults with ID that has been undertaken internationally to date. The population will cover the age span of late adolescence (16 years) through the transition to adult life then through to the elderly. The research will establish the prevalence and nature of mental illness and potential risk factors in a large representative population of adults with ID.
